Rayder soccer tops Suttons Bay, Red Devil baseball takes first loss

SUTTONS BAY — The Charlevoix girls’ soccer team picked up a 3-2 road victory over Suttons Bay Monday in non-conference action.

Charlevoix took a 2-0 lead to the half on the Norse, as Karlee Eaton sent in a cross from Mikayla Sharrow, then Sharrow converted a penalty kick as well.

Charlevoix later made it 3-0 when Claire Scholten set up Sharrow for a second goal just 17 seconds into the second half.

Charlevoix keeper Abbey Wright made 11 saves in the game, helping the Rayders improve to 6-6-1 overall.

Charlevoix next travels to TC St. Francis up next on Thursday, May 11.

Boyne City 1, TC St. Francis 1 

BOYNE CITY — Boyne City soccer played to its second tie of the season and second in as many games when they met up with Traverse City St. Francis Monday.

The Ramblers had Mira Hauger find the back of the net off an assist from Braydin Noble for their lone goal.

Maggi McHugh also made three saves in net to keep it in a close match.

Boyne City moved to 7-1-2 and 5-1-2 within the Lake Michigan Conference. They next meet McBain NMC on Tuesday, then bring in Suttons Bay on Friday, May 12.

BASEBALL 

LAKE MICHIGAN

Kalkaska at Boyne City 

BOYNE CITY — The Boyne City baseball team played to a LMC split with Kalkaska Monday, winning a 6-3 opener before dropping a 4-3 nightcap.

Boyne collected 11 hits in the opener, led by doubles from Mason Wilcox, Conner Rajkovich and Gavin Hewitt, while Hewitt also drove in two runs and Rajkovich and Wilcox each had one RBI.

Kacey Gray went five and two thirds with 10 strikeouts to earn the win.

In game two, Will Brown singled twice, Hewitt drove in a run, as did Chas Stanek.

Owen Hewitt pitched and struck out 12 over five innings, with just two of the four runs coming earned against.

Boyne City moved to 4-9-2 overall with the split.

TC St. Francis at Charlevoix 

CHARLEVOIX — Charlevoix baseball earned a 6-0 victory over Traverse City St. Francis Monday behind a gem from Bryce Johnson on the mound.

Johnson went all six innings with just two hits and two walks allowed, while striking out eight in the win.

Hunter Lemerand doubled and drove in two runs at the plate, while Johnson and Ryan Pearl each added am RBI.

Pearl, Troy Nickel and Owen Waha also all scored a pair of runs in the win.

The victory moved Charlevoix to 17-2-1 overall on the season.

Elk Rapids at East Jordan 

EAST JORDAN — East Jordan baseball took its first loss of the season in a Lake Michigan split vs. Elk Rapids, falling 3-1 and winning 2-1.

Bats were pretty silent for the Red Devils as Ben Reid, Dawson Carey and Brenden Aenis all singled as the lone hits.

Korbyn Russell took the loss in the opener across six innings and four strikeouts.

The Red Devils made up for the loss in game two with an Aenis walk-off single, which brought Carey around to score. Aenis also had a double and Lucas Stone earned the win in relief of Carey.

The Red Devils moved to 15-1 on the season.

NORTHERN LAKES 

Burt Lake NMCA at Harbor Light

HARBOR SPRINGS — Harbor Light Christian baseball earned a sweep over Burt Lake NMCA Monday, both in shutouts of 13-0 and 9-0.

Will Paulus earned the win in the opener, striking out nine.

Caleb Ogden doubled and had two RBIs, Derk Boerman drove in three runs, Jackson Meaner had two RBIs and Joe Ruthig also went 2 for 3.

In game two, Boerman earned the win across five innings with 12 strikeouts. Ogden also drove in two off a single.

Mackinaw City at Boyne Falls 

BOYNE FALLS — Mackinaw City swept in their NLC matchup with Boyne Falls Monday, winning 18-2 and 3-2.

Lars Huffman improved to 8-0 with a game-one victory and three strikeouts.

Nick Vieau and Lucas Bergstrom each doubled, Trystan Swanson had four RBIs and Huffman added three RBIs.

In game two, Sebastian Pierce took the victory on the mound with nine strikeouts.

Huffman and Vieau each doubled, with Vieau adding a single and an RBI.

Mackinaw City improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the NLC.

SOFTBALL 

LAKE MICHIGAN 

Kalkaska at Boyne City 

BOYNE CITY — The Rambler softball team picked up a league split with visiting Kalkaska Monday, winning a 6-5 opener, while losing a 4-2 game two.

Karli Hayden had a walk-off, three-RBI double in the opening game for the Ramblers, which obviously came as the biggest hit of the night.

Rachel Clausen also added two singles for Boyne and Delaney Vollmer earned the win through six innings.

In game two, Addy Cosier and Vollmer each pitched, with Vollmer taking over for Cosier after four innings.

Hayden added two more singles to her night, then Katelyn Dittmar and Clausen added the only other hits of the game for Boyne.

The Ramblers moved to 8-13 overall and 4-4 in LMC action.

NORTHERN LAKES 

Mackinaw City at Boyne Falls 

BOYNE FALLS — Behind a couple of wins in the circle from Marlie Postula, the Mackinaw City softball team swept Boyne Falls in games of 2-0 and 18-2.

Postula struck out 15 in the opener, giving up just two hits, then Julia Sullivan doubled and Poppy Wallace had an RBI single.

In game two, Postula struck out five and gave up three hits. She also tripled, doubled twice and had one RBI.

Madison Smith singled twice, doubled and drove in two, Gracie Beauchamp singled, doubled and had three RBIs, Sullivan singled and doubled with three RBIs and Rian Esper and Vanessa Groenewoud each had RBI singles.

Burt Lake NMCA at Harbor Light

HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Light Christian softball team earned a sweep over Burt Lake NMCA Monday, taking games of 19-1 and 31-19.

The Lady Swordsmen were led at the plate by Jade Evoy and Anna Zielinski with inside-the-park homers and Ava Kenwabikise and Molly Ogden each tripled.

TENNIS 

TC Central at Petoskey 

PETOSKEY — The Petoskey girls’ tennis team continued its busy stretch with a hosted Big North match vs. Traverse City Central Monday.

Petoskey took a 7-1 loss in the matchup, with Adelyn Wang of Petoskey’s No. 3 singles pulling in the lone win in 7-5, 6-3 fashion.

Katya Peck of No. 1 singles fell 6-2, 6-1, Jordan Stark of No. 2 singles dropped a 6-2, 6-3 match and No. 4 singles Kennedy Johnson fell 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Remington Barnadyn and Abby Donovan fell 6-1, 6-0 and the No. 2 team of Anna Varnhagen and Charlie Todd fell 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 3 doubles, Audrey Gietzen and Brynn Bennett dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match and the No. 4 team of Ava Genschaw and Ava Kitscher fell 6-0, 6-1.

Petoskey will get back to action with a hosted BNC match on Thursday, May 11.
