RANKINGS: Yuba City boys blanked by Roseville; Wheatland strengthens hold on PVL
Jan. 12—The Wheatland Union High boys soccer team continues as the top area program through this week, capped by the Pirates' 4-2 win at Twelve Bridges Thursday to move to 7-0-1 in the Pioneer Valley League. Freshman Julian Olivares scored twice, while Hiroshi Yang and Tanner Scott each netted a goal to help Wheatland stay a game-and-a-half up on the Raging Rhinos with six to play.
Lindhurst has the third and final automatic playoff bid out of the Pioneer Valley League. The Blazers swept winless Bear River on Thursday to stay three games up on fourth place Colfax.
Wheatland's ranking dropped slightly to 35th in the Sac-Joaquin Section full rankings coming into its bout at Twelve Bridges. Rankings will be updated on Monday.
MaxPreps does not poll coaches, sportswriters or fans. Nor does its staff make any judgments on the merits of any individual team. Prior season history, school size and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings, MaxPreps said in a statement.
The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule, MaxPreps stated.
For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them than a team ranked ahead, according to MaxPreps.
Other factors that will affect the rankings are times when MaxPreps has incomplete or inaccurate information. MaxPreps will correct errors when they are reported. Missing scores and games can be reported on the team's MaxPreps page.
Yuba City (1-2-1 Capital Valley Conference) was 56th in the SJS coming into Thursday. After its 2-0 defeat at home to Roseville, the Honkers were sixth in the CVC with five to play. Three teams earn auto bids from the CVC.
Inderkum, out of the CVC, is both the top boys and girls soccer team in the section.
Inderkum girls (16-1-1), ranked third in the SJS — and two amid D-I programs — will travel to Yuba City (7-7-3, 0-4-1 CVC) on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. bout with Jerry Schicht's team. Yuba City is ranked 45th in the section — while Sutter leads the area at No. 35 in the Sac-Joaquin Section.
The Huskies (11-3, 6-2 PVL), ranked second in the MaxPreps D-IV rankings, took down Marysville on Thursday to position itself in third in the PVL. Four teams earn auto bids into the playoffs next month.
Sutter will test itself at Colfax (12-1-2) Tuesday night in Placer County beginning at 6:15 p.m. The Falcons are the top D-IV program, as of Thursday, and No. 13 in the full SJS MaxPreps rankings. Twelve Bridges is right behind at No. 14 in the full rankings and No. 2 in D-III. Twelve Bridges hosts Sutter on Jan. 25, Lindhurst Jan. 23 and is at Marysville to end the regular season on Feb. 1.
Lindhurst continues to hold onto the fourth and final playoff spot in the PVL by three games over Marysville.
