Rangers top prospect Brennan Othmann scores twice in AHL debut

New York Rangers left wing Brennan Othmann (78) looks out during warmups before a game against the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden

It didn’t take long for Rangers top prospect Brennan Othmann to make an impact at the AHL level.

In his first career game with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the talented 20-year-old winger scored twice in the team's 3-2 shootout win over the Providence Bruins on opening night.

Trailing 1-0 just over five minutes into the second period, Othmann found some open ice and fired one a one-time feed from Jonny Brodzinski to get the Wolf Pack on the board with a power play goal.

Providence would jump back in front and carried that 2-1 lead late into the third period, however, Hartford drew another penalty and was able to find the equalizer again.

After a bit of a flurry in front of the Bruins' net, the puck squirted out to Othmann at the point, and he riffled home a wrister to even the game at two and send things to overtime.

After a scoreless 3-on-3 session, Brodzinski would eventually secure Hartford’s first win of the season in the shootout.

Though he wasn't able to scratch his way onto the Opening Night roster with the big-league squad, Othmann has certainly been impressing with his play early on this season.

The former first-round pick got a long look from new head coach Peter Laviolette during the preseason and he certainly made the most of it, scoring twice across five games.

Despite that, he was reassigned to Hartford as expected, and he responded by putting together a spectacular season opener and being named the AHL's Second Star of the Night.

Othmann's game-changing scoring abilities have been on full display so far this season, and if he continues playing this way he could find his way onto the NHL roster sooner rather than later.
