Randall girls, Canyon boys win 4A state championships in cross country
A year after making history, the Canyon High School boys cross country team are state champions once again. This year, the Randall girls joined them.
The Eagle boys finished with a score of 56, 49 points ahead of second place La Feria. Alex Niemiec was the individual winner in 4A with a time of 15 minutes, 18.7 seconds while finishing second overall. Lathan Lewter had a fourth-place time of 15:25.2. Ryan Fernandez was also a top-10 finisher with a time of 15:40.1 to place him seventh.
Dumas finished ninth in the boys 4A race with 230 points. Brian Corona was their top finisher in 21st place with a time of 16:41.5. Marty Fletcher of Randall finished 119th with a time of 18:04.3.
The Lady Raiders also won state, marking the first time they've brought the first-place trophy home since 2018 and the fifth time overall. Randall finished with 50 points, 11 ahead of second place Fredericksburg. Freshmen Nayomi Granados (11:17.6) and Brooke French (11:17.6) took home the silver and bronze medals while Aspen Turman (11:52.0) finished ninth.
CISD actually finished with the top-three finishers at state for girls. Canyon High's Addyson Bristow won gold with a time of 11:08.5. The Lady Eagles added another top 10 finisher with 10th place Kate Sheppard. She finished with a time of 11:53.6.
Mia Lujan of Dumas (12:13.0) finished in 29th place while West Plains' Elliot Jackson (12:53.9) finished 93rd.
In Class 1A, the Texline boys finished in 14th place as top runner Will Clay finished 29th at 18:34.0. Bryson Brockman of Nazareth finished 56th at 18:45.0 while Hunter Lovell of Claude finished 29th at 18:05.5. Brance Ferguson of Happy (17:36.8, 14th), Alex Acevedo of Silverton (17:49.4, 22nd) and Aiden Schilling of Follett (18:32.7, 45th) all ran strong.
For the 1A girls, it's no surprise that Taytum Goodman of Springlake-Earth won state again, this time with a time of 11:20.10, 39.3 seconds ahead of second. Jada Clay of Texline finished sixth at 12:22.7. Madison Brockman of Nazareth ended in 16th at 12:57.3 while Silverton's Melody Rampley finished in 19th place (12:59.2).
Makayla Chaney of White Deer (13:11.7) finished 28th, Springlake-Earth finished fourth as a team with 131 and Nazareth was 7th at 153.
In 2A boys, the area had one top 10 finisher as Wetera Schlachter finished 10th for Boys Ranch with a time of 16:37.4.
Sunray finished 13th as a team with its top runner, Justin Bain, finishing 33rd at 17:43.5. Adrian Rosales of Booker finished 22nd with a time of 17:05 while Gruver's Gustavo Quintana finished in 17:23.5, good enough for 40th. Jaron Shackelford of Fritch finished in 17:42.2 to take 55th place while Ryder Robinson of Memphis finished in 30th at 17:12.5.
The Panhandle finished with a silver medalist in Farwell's Isabella Jaime, who took second in 2A with a time of 11:47.3. Her teammate Alexis Wade finished in fourth at 12:04.5 as Farwell finished 5th as a team for 2A girls. Panhandle High School finished sixth with Riley Segura taking home 24th place at 12:49.3.
Gruver finished ninth as a team with Jordan Schenk finishing 27th at 12:54. Tandie Cummins of Clarendon finished 53rd with a time of 13:01.8, Stratford's Mila Thompson finished 48th at 12:57.6 and Shamrock's Skylynn Lawyer took 123rd at 14:12.1. Addy Mock of Wellington finished in 59th at 13:06.7.
Yvonne Legarreta of Friona was the Panhandle's lone top 10 finisher in Class 3A girls as she finished in fifth at 11:45.1. Dalhart finished fourth as a team with Victoria Terrazas taking 16th place at 12:25.7. Canadian finished in 11th with Konnar McClendon taking home 12th place at 12:15.3.
No 3A boys team sent anyone to state.
For 5A boys, Palo Duro's Abdirisak Saidgurhan was the top finisher for the area at 28th at 16:05.8. Parker Maybin of Amarillo High finished 62nd at 16:34.5. There were no 5A girls competing from the area.
