Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo taken to hospital with back injury
LAS VEGAS – Jimmy Garoppolo’s Week 6 ended early.
The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback injured his back during the first half of Sunday’s 21-17 win over his former squad, the New England Patriots, and didn’t take the field with the team in the second half.
The Raiders announced Garoppolo sustained a back injury and ruled him out of the game during the third quarter. Garoppolo was transported to a local hospital to get his back evaluated, the team confirmed.
Las Vegas replaced Garoppolo with another ex-Patriot: Brian Hoyer. The veteran got the nod over rookie Aidan O'Connell, who started in Week 4 when Garoppolo sat out against the Los Angeles Chargers while recovering from a concussion.
Hoyer marked his return quickly. On his first pass, he connected on a deep pass to Tre Tucker for a 48-yard gain that set up a field goal that extended the Las Vegas lead to 16-10. Hoyer went on to complete six of 10 passes for 102 yards.
Garoppolo finished 14-of-22 passing for 162 yards, with a touchdown and interception.
Although the extent of his injury was not immediately known, it threatens to add to an extensive injury history that has marred his 10-year NFL career.
Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury last season as a member of the San Francisco 49ers, and he has played just two seasons in which he has appeared in at least 15 games.
Garoppolo entered Week 6 with 917 passing yards, six touchdowns and an NFL-high seven interceptions.
