QB CJ Beathard signs with Jacksonville Jaguars

The CJ Beathard era is over in San Francisco. The former third-round pick is headed to Jacksonville on a one-year contract according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The 49ers needed to redo their quarterback room, and Beathard’s return appeared unlikely even as the free agent QB options wore thin.

Beathard joined the 49ers in 2017 as a third-round pick out of Iowa, and he never lived up to that draft position, bouncing between second-string, starter and third-string during his career.

He started 12 of the 19 games he played and was inactive for all of the 2019 season while Nick Mullens took over the backup spot. Beathard went 2-10 as a starter, completing 58.6 percent of his throws for 3,469 yards, 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Now instead of battling for a backup spot in San Francisco, Beathard will likely work as a backup for presumed No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence.
