Previewing Texas Tech baseball vs. Texas Southern

The Texas Tech baseball team, back from a five-game road trip in Arlington to start the season, plays its home-opening series this weekend against Texas Southern.

The 22nd-ranked Red Raiders (3-2) and the Tigers (2-2) square off at 2 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Dan Law Field/Rip Griffin Park.

Tech put together a three-game win streak against Nebraska, Oregon and Texas-Arlington, sandwiched between a season-opening loss to No. 8 Tennessee and a trip-ending setback Wednesday against No. 7 Oregon State. All five games were at Globe Life Field.

Texas Southern also started the season in a Major League stadium, winning two of three in the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic at Minute Maid Field. The Tigers are coming off an 8-4 loss Wednesday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Texas Southern finished 31-22 last season and has back five position players who started at least 25 games last year: shortstop C.J. Castillo (.355, six home runs, 42 runs batted in last season), left fielder Chase Cromer (.344-0-10, 19 stolen bases), third baseman Jaden Jones (.286-5-28), catcher Michael Goudeau (.361-1-20) and right fielder Jordan Vidato (.253-1-11).

A pair of junior-college transfers are leading the team in RBI: first baseman Jose Villalobos (.273-2-4) and right fielder Rafael Gross (.286-0-4).
