Trump issued an executive order earlier this year to modify and rename the council. According to that order, the group will be made up of 30 members who will advise the administration on ways to encourage national participation in sports and fitness activities.

The president has a well-documented relationship with Belichick, as well as Patriots owner Robert Kraft and quarterback Tom Brady. Trump has mentioned Belichick at past White House meetings, and the team gave the president a Super Bowl ring after their championship in 2017.

The White House said that Belichick's colleagues on the council will include golfer Natalie Gulbis, Olympic beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor, retired pitcher Mariano Rivera, retired running back Herschel Walker and television host Dr. Mehmet Oz.

The executive order stipulates that the members of the council are not paid, but may be reimbursed for expenses or given a per diem.
