Prep spotlight: Williamsville volleyball remains unbeaten in Sangamo

Here are the high school sports results from around Springfield for Monday and Tuesday.

TUESDAY’S RESULTS

VOLLEYBALL

Williamsville stays perfect in Sangamo

WILLIAMSVILLE — Williamsville rallied midway through the second set en route to a 25-13, 25-18 Sangamo Conference victory over Petersburg PORTA at Dave Root Court.

Junior outside hitter Britni Walters poured in 15 kills and 10 digs to keep the Bullets (16-6 overall, 6-0 Sangamo) atop the league standings.

Williamsville won the outright Sangamo title last season and its remaining conference schedule includes Maroa-Forsyth, Mason City Illini Central and New Berlin.

Brianna Walters and Paige Wendling each delivered five kills in the win. Riley Holliday had 21 assists and seven digs while Hope Keenan contributed 10 digs, three aces and two assists.

Cassie Cox had two kills and two blocks for PORTA (14-6, 4-2 Sangamo) while Chloe Maltby and Jayce Privia had 10 and eight digs, respectively.

IN OTHER NEWS: KAMI SHEEDY had nine kills and KAYLEE COWHICK had 12 assists in New Berlin’s 25-22, 25-17 Sangamo Conference loss to Athens. … IZZIE BRADSHAW had 13 kills and teammate KATE COSGRIFF had 28 assists as Jacksonville Routt rallied from a first-game loss to beat White Hall North Greene 20-25, 25-11, 25-17. BRIANNE ROGERS had 13 digs for the Rockets. … JAYCEE BRINKOETTER had 14 assists, 10 digs and three kills in Pawnee’s 26-24, 25-17 loss at Shelbyville.

GIRLS SWIMMING AND DIVING

SHG rolls to dual win

Sacred Heart-Griffin won 10 of 11 events and defeated Lincoln 111-34 in a dual girls swimming and diving meet at Eisenhower Pool.

Senior Annie Mizeur, junior Izzy Canny and sophomore Mac Gibbs contributed to wins in eight events for SHG. Mizeur competed in the three victorious relays — the 200-yard medley and the 200 and 400 freestyles. She also won her one individual event, the 100 butterfly.

Canny was on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay and touched first in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Gibbs won the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and was a member on the 200 medley and 200 free relay.

Other individual winners for SHG included: sophomore Sophia Paul (1-meter diving) and freshman Isabella Farley (500 freestyle).

Freshman Norah Block grabbed the one victory for Lincoln by winning the 100 breaststroke. The 200 individual medley was not swum.

IN OTHER NEWS: ADDISON WHERLEY won the 200-yard freestyle and Petersburg PORTA finished in third place with 39 points in a triangular meet against Macomb and Stanford Olympia. Macomb won the meet with 97 points and Olympia was second with 86.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Litchfield’s Quarton, Rochester win invite

CARLINVILLE — Litchfield’s Camden Quarton easily topped the field of 91 runners at the Carlinville Invite on Tuesday.

Quarton finished the 3-mile race in 15 minutes, 48.99 seconds and had plenty of time to catch his breath before Shelbyville’s Ryne Peavler crossed in second place 56.78 seconds later.

Auburn had a pair of teammates fighting for third with James Baisden edging Jacob Barth 16:51.99-16:52.45. Lincoln’s Jacob Short took fifth place in 16:56.33.

Rochester won the 10-team title with 81 points. The Rockets’ top finisher, Jack Armbruster, was sixth overall in 17:00.64 while Wyatt Gustafson was 15th in 18:14.70. Rochester’s team score was aided by 18th-place finisher Joey Thomas (18:25.08), 21st-place finisher Ammon Hardy (18:27.11) and Kieran Powers (25th, 18:43.42).

Shelbyville was second with 86 team points, barely beating third-place Litchfield by a point and fourth-place Lincoln by two points. Auburn was fifth with 121 points while host Carlinville finished sixth with 125.

Taylorville sweeps in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE — Taylorville runners took the top eight spots and easily won a triangular meet Tuesday at Jacksonville Community Park.

Owen Morgan won the 2.9-mile race in 15 minutes, 44.00 seconds, followed six seconds later by teammate Liam Bettis. Jesse Sloan (16:39.58), Tyler Corpin (16:40.74) and Jack Chesser (16:57.29) rounded out the top five, all from Taylorville.

Taylorville beat Jerseyville 15-59 while host Jacksonville was third with 66 points. Jacksonville’s top finisher was Andrew Schumacher, who finished in 17:46.76, good for 10th place.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Zeiberts pace Rochester to victory

CARLINVILLE — Ashley and Brooke Zeibert finished second and third to help lead Rochester to a team win in the Carlinville Invite on Tuesday.

Ashley Zeibert, finished runner-up to Shelbyville’s Tessa Bowers in 18 minutes, 47.89 seconds. Bowers won the individual title with a time of 18:14.08. Brooke Zeibert crossed with a time of 18:54.86.

Rochester teammate Maria Olson was 10th in 20:56.55. Auburn’s Mackenzie Mallicoat (seventh, 19:51.42) and Litchfield’s Darby Braasch (ninth, 20:49.24) also had top-10 finishes.

The Rockets beat out Shelbyville 27-34 for the team title. Carlinville, the race’s host, was fourth with 118 points to beat out fifth-place Staunton (124 points).

Goodman, Smith carry Taylorville

JACKSONVILLE — Ella Goodman and Hallie Smith went 1-2 for Taylorville as the Tornadoes topped Jerseyville in a dual-team race at Jacksonville Community Park on Tuesday.

Goodman finished first on the 2.9-mile course in 19 minutes, 21.36 seconds while Smith was second in 21.23.18. Jacksonville’s Hailey Casey was third in 23:00.20, though the Crimsons did not have enough runners for a team score.

Taylorville’s Sydnie Vocks was fifth overall in 23:32.11.

GIRLS TENNIS

SHG shuts out Lincoln

Sacred Heart-Griffin swept the singles matches in straight sets and won all three pro-set doubles matches for a 9-0 triumph over Lincoln in a girls tennis dual meet at SHG.

Caroline Sheehan (No. 1 singles), MK Christie (No. 2), Sydney Gathard (No. 3), Maggie Klinc (No. 4), Alaina Roland (No. 5) and Jayceline Russell (No. 6) rolled in their respective singles matches for SHG.

In doubles, Lily White paired with Katherine Karns for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. Gathard and Klinc won 8-0 at No. 2, and Molly Davis and Christie had an 8-1 win at No. 3.

BOYS SOCCER

Riverton falls at Argenta

ARGENTA — Rylan Lawson recorded a hat trick and Argenta-Oreana defeated Riverton 3-0 in a nonconference boys soccer game.

Lawson scored twice in the first half at 25 and 35 minutes. He added his final goal at 47:00 in the second half. Riverton outshot Argenta-Oreana 9-5, but goalie Adrik McMillion stopped all nine shots to post the shutout.

MONDAY’S RESULTS

BOYS SOCCER

Unbeaten Triad nicks Rochester

TROY — Rochester came up just shy of toppling unbeaten Troy Triad in a 3-2 nonconference loss.

Lach Sullivan scored on Brenden McArdle’s assist in the second half before assisting to Tucker Spraetz.

Caden Lutz scored the opening goal on Wyatt Sutter’s assist for Triad’s 1-0 halftime lead. Gibson Hunt and Cory Warren each scored unassisted after the break.

Triad (14-0-1) had eight shots on goal while Rochester (13-4) had four.

Riverton blanks North Mac

RIVERTON — Isaac Crumrine dialed up two goals and three assists in Riverton/Buffalo Tri-City's 8-0 nonconference win over North Mac.

He assisted to Jackson Nibbe and Julian Rice in the first half while also scoring on Tristen Willig’s assist for a 3-0 halftime lead. He assisted to Bryce Kukla to begin the second half and scored on Nibbe’s assist.

Nibbe finished with two goals and an assist. Willig ended with a goal and assist.

VOLLEYBALL

SHS tops Tri-City

Eva Hamann tallied 11 kills and seven assists in Springfield High’s 25-20, 25-18 nonconference win over Buffalo Tri-City at Willard Duey Gymnasium.

Alix Bibb added seven kills. Ruth Becker and Lily Lambert contributed 10 and eight digs, respectively. Rachel Becker had four blocks while Madison Clark had 16 assists. Lil Ambrose added two aces.

Mount Pulaski edges St. Teresa

DECATUR — Alyson Murphy totaled five kills and 15 digs in Mount Pulaski’s 25-22, 26-24 nonconference win over Decatur St. Teresa.

Ella Bobell fueled the offense with 19 assists while Kamrie Charron had seven kills. Alyson Murphy led the defense with 15 digs while Elayna Marten had four aces and 13 digs. Grace Davis chipped in five kills and a block.

IN OTHER NEWS: KAYLEE COWHICK supplied 12 assists and three aces in New Berlin’s 25-10, 25-17 nonconference win over Winchester West Central. DAKOTA KNOX had 12 digs. … Jacksonville Routt's GRACE CLEVELAND had four aces, five blocks and 11 digs in a 25-20, 22-25, 25-15 nonconference loss to Jacksonville. … MACKENZIE MEHOCHKO totaled 10 kills and eight digs in Nokomis’ 25-11, 25-13 MSM Conference win over Pawnee. KINLEY STOLTE provided 12 assists and nine digs. ADDISON GLENN chipped in seven kills. … Carlinville’s ISABELLA TIBURZI doled out eight kills, 14 assists and two aces in a 25-19, 25-22 nonconference win over Jerseyville.
