Prep Spotlight: Jacksonville drops pair to Quincy, other local results from May 17-18

Here are regular-season baseball and softball results for May 17-18:

Saturday’s results

BASEBALL

QUINCY 6, JACKSONVILLE 2: At Quincy, pitchers James Day and Brady Lowe combined for 14 strikeouts, and the Blue Devils won the first game of a doubleheader.

Lowe struck out eight and walked none in three innings of relief. Day, the winner, allowed three hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and three walks.

Hayden Hicks had a hit and drove in a run for Jacksonville.

QUINCY 3, JACKSONVILLE 2: In Game 2 at Quincy, the Blue Devils scored a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Lowe and completed the doubleheader sweep.

Anderson Decker singled and scored a run on a passed ball in the first for Jacksonville. He walked with the bases loaded to force in a run that tied the game 2-2 in the fourth.

NORMAL WEST 4, ROCHESTER 2: At Rochester, Normal West scored a run each in four different innings to defeat the Rockets in a nonconference game.

Rochester got within 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning but could not complete the comeback. Jack Swaney had a sacrifice fly, and Jorey Myren singled in a run in Rochester’s two-run fifth.

Sam DesCarpentrie drove in two runs for Normal West.

CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL 5, SOUTHEAST 0: At Champaign, Chase Bartlett hurled a one-hit shutout, and the Maroons downed the Spartans in nonconference play.

Bartlett finished with five strikeouts and one walk. Brayden Twist had the lone hit for Southeast, which was a single in the second inning.

Champaign Central scored three runs in the third and two in the sixth off losing pitcher Miles Leininger, who went the distance. Leininger fanned five, walked one and allowed seven hits and five runs, two earned.

EDWARDSVILLE 12, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 8: At Edwardsville, Greyson Rathgeb had two hits and drove in six runs as the Tigers defeated the Senators in a nonconference game.

Rathgeb had an RBI sacrifice fly, a two-run double and a three-run home run to account for his six RBIs.

Enrico Veach had a sacrifice fly in the first and a two-run double in the third for Springfield. Brody Scheffler went 2-for-4 and scored three runs in the loss.

SOFTBALL

MOUNT ZION 6, LINCOLN 0: At Mount Zion, pitcher Ella Fink fanned 14 batters and hurled a two-hit shutout in the first game of a doubleheader.

Fink walked just one batter and went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI at the plate. Addison Rotz doubled twice and drove in a run for the Braves.

Losing pitcher Madisen Wurth doubled and Faith Eckhardt had a single for Lincoln.

MOUNT ZION 7, LINCOLN 5: In Game 2 at Mount Zion, Rotz went 4-for-4 with a home run and scored three times as the Braves completed the doubleheader sweep.

Avelyn Ethell had a two-run homer for Mount Zion.

Regan Kutz hit a solo homer for Lincoln, and Taryn Stoltzenburg finished 2-for-4 with two runs. Grey Gilbert had two RBIs in the defeat.

Friday's results

SOFTBALL

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 9, BELLEVILLE EAST 5: At Belleville, Ryleigh Kiel, Karmen Edwards and Cassandra Feld collected two hits apiece as the Titans won a nonconference game.

Kiel had an RBI single in the first inning, and Sophia Feld drove in two runs with a single in the second. Taryn Griffith and Cassandra Feld both had RBI doubles, and Kate Feld delivered a run-scoring single in Glenwood’s three-run fourth.

Belleville East scored five unearned runs in the fourth to get within 6-5 until the Titans plated three in the seventh. Mollie Cascio had a run-scoring single, and Edwards drove in two with a double for Glenwood.

Pitcher Irie Lohrenz fanned 12 and walked one in a complete-game effort. She allowed six hits and no earned runs.

LINCOLN 1, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 0: At Lincoln, pitchers Madison Wurth and Regan Kutz combined on a four-hit shutout, and the Railers scratched a run across in the fifth inning to collect the win.

Faith Eckhardt singled to start the fifth, and she stole third after Morgan Sheley walked. Eckhardt scored on a bunt by Kate Farnam.

Wurth, the winning pitcher, went 5 1/3 innings and allowed four hits to go with four strikeouts and two walks. Kutz pitched a flawless 1 2/3 innings.

Mia Volpert took the loss for Springfield. She struck out 11, walked two and gave up three hits.

MOUNT ZION 7, ROCHESTER 6: At Mount Zion, Chloe Williams plated a run on a walk-off groundout, and the Braves scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get by the Rockets.

Trailing 6-3 in the seventh, Joelie Shafer stole home, and Ashlynn Dover scored on an error as Mount Zion got within one run. Kyleigh Garber tied the game with an RBI single before Williams (2-for-4, two RBIs) drove in the game-winner with two outs. Ella Fink went 3-for-4 in the win.

Jaelyn Watts was the losing pitcher for Rochester. She struck out 10, walked three and allowed nine hits and seven earned runs.

Brooklyn Thompson had a two-run single in Rochester’s four-run third, and Peyton Purves belted a two-run home run in a two-run fourth.

BASEBALL

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 7, O’FALLON 0: At O’Fallon, Cru Erickson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Cam Appenzeller dazzled on the mound in a nonconference win for the Titans.

Appenzeller struck out 12, walked one and gave up just three hits in a complete-game masterpiece.

Erickson popped a three-run home run in a four-run third inning. Erickson added a run-scoring single, and Colten Knoedler and Bryce Murphy both had RBI singles for Glenwood.

SOUTHEAST 3, KANKAKEE 2 (9 innings): At Eisenhower Park, Miles Leininger scored on a walk-off error in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Spartans won a nonconference game.

Leininger doubled with one out and came home on an error from second base on a ground ball that was hit by Carter Hood. Southeast scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Brayden Twist that scored Tim Herrington in the first.

With the game tied 1-1, Herrington gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the second before Kankakee tied it with a run in the third.

Herrington threw one relief inning for the win. Ethan Murphy did most of the heavy lifting on the mound, throwing eight innings for a no-decision. Murphy struck out seven, walked two and gave up six hits and two earned runs.    

TAYLORVILLE 1, MATTOON 0: At Taylorville, Maxx Greime hit a walk-off single to drive in Kason Pembroke in the bottom of the seventh inning in the Charlie Due wooden bat tournament.

Pembroke walked to start the seventh and reached third on a Mattoon error and a walk by Clark Durbin, who walked three times.

Pitcher Blake Ladage hurled a complete game for Taylorville. Ladage struck out one, walked two and threw a four-hit shutout.

BARTONVILLE LIMESTONE 6, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 2: At Bartonville, Springfield was limited to just two hits in the first game of a doubleheader loss.

Brody Scheffler scored on an error in the first inning and had an RBI single in the fifth for Springfield.

BARTONVILLE LIMESTONE 2, SPRINGFIELD HIGH 1 (9 innings): In Game 2 at Bartonville, Gino Holt scored on a walk-off error in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Limestone completed the sweep.

Levi Friedrich stole home in the fourth to account for Springfield’s one run. The Senators finished with three hits.
