Prep Spotlight: Volpert leads SHS past Rochester, Glenwood wins CS8, plus more from May 6-7

Here are the local high school softball results from The State Journal-Register's coverage area on Monday and Tuesday, May 6-7:

Tuesday's results

SPRINGFIELD HIGH 5, ROCHESTER 1: At Rochester, Mia Volpert totaled nine strikeouts in a complete game and the Senators recorded a Central State Eight Conference win.

She gave up one run on seven hits and two walks while ushering a hit and scoring two runs. Kendall Knauer furnished two hits with an RBI and run while Megan Bullock contributed two hits with two RBIs and a run. Rachel Becker delivered three hits.

SHS (14-4, 8-2 CS8) ended a scoreless tie with four runs in the fifth inning.

Peyton Purves led Rochester (19-5, 5-3 CS8) with two hits. Mylie Deatherage took the loss in five innings. She gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 2, DECATUR EISENHOWER 0 (forfeit): In a game that was supposed to be played Tuesday, Eisenhower forfeited due to a lack of players and that wrapped up a perfect 10-0 Central State Eight Conference record for the Titans.

Through Tuesday, Glenwood is 23-4. The Titans lost three straight games on May 3-4. Glenwood has four nonconference games remaining this season.

NORMAL U-HIGH 2, SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 0: At Normal, SHG pitcher Kenzie Wieland struck out nine, but the Pioneers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third to secure a Central State Eight Conference win.

Wieland allowed just four hits and two walks.

Lucy Wegner had the only hit for the Cyclones.

AUBURN 3, PLEASANT PLAINS 0: At Auburn, Meena Taylor hurled a three-hit shutout, and the Trojans scored a run each in three separate innings for a Sangamo Conference win.

Taylor finished with six strikeouts and three walks. Auburn struck in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on Addison Wheatley’s RBI single that plated Addison Jones.

Jones, who walked four times, scored the second run on a Plains error in the third. Taylor added an insurance run with an RBI single in the sixth.

LINCOLN 13, DECATUR MACARTHUR 1 (5 innings): At Decatur, Lincoln blew the game open by scoring 11 runs in two innings for a Central State Eight Conference victory.

The Railers led 2-0 until they put up five runs in the third. Kate Farnam (2-for-3) had an RBI single, and winning pitcher Regan Kutz (2-for-4) doubled in a run to highlight the inning.

Farnam had another RBI single, and Morgan Sheley (3-for-4, two runs) singled in a run in Lincoln’s six-run fourth. Kutz, who finished with three RBIs, had a two-run single and Kelsey Marten followed with an RBI double. Taryn Stoltzenburg ended 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Kutz went the distance in the circle, striking out eight and walking two and giving up three hits and one unearned run.

WILLIAMSVILLE 13, MAROA-FORSYTH 0 (5 innings): At Williamsville, Izzy Nowack and Ella Greer combined to knock in eight runs in the Bullets’ Sangamo Conference game.

Nowack hit a grand slam in Williamsville’s seven-run third inning. She finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Greer doubled, homered and finished with four RBIs.

Williamsville’s Norah Dodsworth was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Elle Smithers hit a triple for the Bullets.

Lucy Nell, who singled twice, struck out eight in her complete-game shutout. She allowed two hits and four walks.

PAWNEE 18, RAYMOND LINCOLNWOOD 3 (4 innings): At Raymond, Adalyn Boblitt went 3-for-4 with a double, five RBIs and three runs scored as Pawnee cruised to an MSM Conference victory.

Pawnee had five players who each knocked in multiple runs. Kalee Hinds was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Makenna Corrie, Amber Bradbury — who also doubled — and Haley Maretti all drove in two runs. While Ava Rodriguez was 2-for-3 without an RBI, she crossed the plate four times.

Maretti struck out nine in her win. She allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.

BEARDSTOWN 5, MANITO MIDWEST CENTRAL 4: At Beardstown, Shelby Goodrich contributed three hits and two runs while earning the win in the circle.

She tossed a complete game with four strikeouts. She gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks. Vanessa Nunez supplied two hits, two RBIs and a run, including a double.

The Tigers scored four runs in the third before holding on for the win.

WARRENSBURG-LATHAM 5, PANA 4: At Warrensburg, Pana scored four unanswered runs, but its rally fell short in a nonconference loss.

The Panthers trailed 5-0 before scoring a run each in the fifth and seventh innings and two in the sixth.

Lilly Jostes got Pana within 5-1 with an RBI single in the fifth. Norah Kingery then singled in a run and the Panthers scored another on a fielder’s choice in the sixth.

Shelby Ashcraft’s run-scoring double with no outs in the seventh made the score 5-4. But Pana left the bases loaded as Warrensburg-Latham winning pitcher Kelsey Oakley went the distance and got out of the jam.

MOWEAQUA CENTRAL A&M 4, TAYLORVILLE 0: At Taylorville, Reece Brockelsby, Aubrey Kietzman, Jessi Wright and Kyleigh Heimsness all had hits for the Tornadoes in a nonconference shutout loss.

MACON MERIDIAN 20, RIVERTON 0 (4 innings): At Macon, Brooklyn Lanham and Opal Withers had the Hawks’ only hits in a nonconference loss.

Monday's results

GILLESPIE 7, GREENVILLE 1: At Greenville, senior pitcher Emma Gipson struck out five in a complete-game no-hitter as the Miners clinched at least a share of the South Central Conference title.

Greenville scored one unearned run off two Gillespie errors.

Sadie Sholtis was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Miners (23-4 overall, 8-0 SCC) while Ava Parish also knocked in a pair of runs.

The Miners wrap up conference play on Wednesday at Hillsboro (11-12, 2-5 SCC through Monday).

CHATHAM GLENWOOD 11, PLEASANT PLAINS 0: At Pleasant Plains, Cassandra Feld homered, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored as the Titans blanked the Cardinals in a nonconference matchup.

Feld’s homer, a solo shot, came in the top of the sixth inning to put Glenwood ahead 3-0. The Titans scored eight in the top of the seventh.

Sydney Feld went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while Kate Feld doubled and drove in a run. Combined, the Felds hit four extra-base hits and accounted for seven RBIs.

Irie Lohrenz pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout. She struck out seven and didn’t allow a walk.

STAUNTON 4, CARLINVILLE 3: At Carlinville, Samantha Anderson’s run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs’ South Central Conference win.

Staunton (16-4 overall, 8-1 SCC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ele Feldmann hit an RBI single. Teammate Taylor Nolan was 3-for-4 with a run scored while Feldmann and Korryn Keehner each had two hits apiece.

Gianno Bianco got the complete-game win by trusting her defense. She allowed three runs — two earned — on eight hits and four walks without a strikeout.

Carlinville’s No. 9 hitter, Braley Wiser, was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

WILLIAMSVILLE 7, MACON MERIDIAN 4: At Macon, Ella Greer hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the seventh to give the Bullets the lead in a nonconference game.

Teammate Izzy Nowack doubled, homered and drove in three runs while Norah Dodsworth finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The game was tied 3-3 before Williamsville hung four runs in the top of the seventh. After the Hawks scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, the potential tying run was on deck when the game ended.

PANA 14, VANDALIA 4 (5 innings): At Pana, the Panthers exploded with five runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to turn what was once a 3-1 game into a 10-run rule South Central Conference celebration.

Brianna Mathis gave Pana an RBI ground out in the first inning and an RBI double in the third before she hit a three-run single in the bottom of the fourth.

Allie Sarver hit an inside-the-park home run while Izzy Reed tripled for the Panthers. Teammate Shelby Ashcraft also finished with three hits.

ATHENS 12, HARTSBURG-EMDEN 2 (5 innings): At Athens, Layken Buch and Kenzie Szoke combined to drive in seven runs as the Warriors clobbered the Stags in a Tomahawk Conference meeting.

Buch homered as part of her two-hit outing and drove in four runs. Szoke was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Preslie Buckmaster also homered for the Warriors, and she, as well as Carly Szoke, finished with two hits apiece.

Buch struck out nine over five innings to get the win. She allowed two runs — one earned — on two hits and two walks.

HAVANA 18, ASTORIA/VIT 0 (4 innings): At Havana, the Ducks got multiple RBIs by five different players, including Libbie Johnson’s four, as the Ducks shellacked the Rebels.

Johnson also hit a pair of doubles.

Addi Atwater singled, walked, drove in three runs and scored four times. Hannah Hodgson, Jaylynn Sarnes and Lily Snowden all had two RBIs apiece.

Johnson struck out five in her complete-game shutout. She allowed one hit and two walks.

CUBA NORTH FULTON 5, RUSHVILLE-INDUSTRY 4: At Cuba, Elliot Hood, Italee Ford and Devin Vogler all had two hits apiece for the Rockets, but North Fulton got a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh for the come-from-behind win.

Vogler drove in two runs for Rushville-Industry.

DOWNS TRI-VALLEY 6, LINCOLN 1: At Lincoln, Taryn Stoltzenburg had two hits and finished with a stolen base and a run scored in the Railsplitters’ nonconference loss.

NORMAL U-HIGH 17, LANPHIER 2 (4 innings): At Lawless Park, Tamaih Jefferson had two hits in the Lions’ Central State Eight Conference home loss. Maylee Payne had an RBI single for Lanphier.
