Prep sports: West soccer teams post sweep of Albert Lea

NORTH MANKATO — Sydney Shain and Aubrey Makela each scored two goals as Mankato West defeated Albert Lea 5-0 in a Big Nine Conference girls soccer match Thursday at Caswell North.

Keana Jordan also scored a goal, while Shain, Molly Miller, Marleigh Jordan, Sophia Post and Grace Raverty each had an assist.

Goalkeepers Anne Schill and Romo Smith combined for the ninth shutout of the season.

West (11-5, 8-3 in Big Nine) open the section playoffs next week.

Mankato West boys 4, Albert Lea 1: Isaac Ulman, Hunter Rigdon, Leo DeMars and Ryan Rooney each scored goals in the Scarlets' Big Nine win at Albert Lea.

Cristian Quintana had two assists, while Rooney and DeMars each had one.

Carter Schaff made six saves.

Cross country

Owatonna Invitational: Isaiah Anderson was the individual winner in 15:47.37, leading Mankato East to the victory in the boys race at Brooktree Golf Course.

East won the meet with 35 points, while Mankato West took eighth at 203.

For the Cougars, Luke Scholtes placed fifth in 16:06.97, Audi Thom took seventh in 16:18.83, Dayton Clobes finished ninth in 16:26.70, and Evan MacLean was 13th in 16:35.15.

West's Ephraim Staley finished sixth in 16:11.85. Landon Bannerman took 34th in 17:09.00, with Ethan Cox in 52nd at 17:32.09, Ian Kim in 53rd at 17:32.88 and Tyler Kirchoff in 58th at 17:41.09.

In the girls race, West placed fifth with 181 points, and East took seventh at 190.

West's Landree Quint took sixth in 19:07.91, with Chloe Aanenson in 25th at 20:29.51, Hannah James in 45th at 21:02.48, Zoe Williams in 49th at 21:06.65 and Kayleigh Hulzebos in 56th at 21:29.80.

East's top runner was Lauren Henkels in 14th at 19:45.96. Tori Blasl took 32nd in 20:49.04, Madison Wolle placed 41st in 21:00.82, Nora Javens was 50th in 21:16.86, and Elena Schroeder finished 53rd in 21:23.64.

Volleyball

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial 3, Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 0: Ella Voges served four aces as the Knights won 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 in a Valley Conference match at Lake Crystal.

Grace Sandmeyer led the Knights with nine kills, and Ally Mann had eight kills.

LCWM (12-6, 5-1 in Valley) plays Saturday at home against St. Clair.

St. Clair 3, Nicollet 0: Leah Bode had eight kills, one more than Savannah Klockziem, in Nicollet's 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 home Valley loss.

Mia Lambrecht made 13 assists.

Madelia 3, Mankato Loyola 0: Ashlynn Sweet made 11 kills in Madelia's 25-19, 25-21, 25-14 victory in a Valley home match.

Ashley Sorenson had 21 assists, and Corban Tatro served five aces.

Madelia (11-14, 2-5 in Valley) plays Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Tuesday at Northrop.

Faribault Bethlehem Academy 3, United South Central 1: Kendall Harpestad had 12 kills and 13 digs, and Madison Passer added 11 kills and 17 digs in the Rebels' 23-25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-11 in a Gopher Conference match at Wells.

Eleny Korn made 27 assists.

USC (5-15, 0-8 in Gopher) plays Tuesday at Blooming Prairie.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 3, Medford 1: Addison Condon had 13 kills and 19 digs as the Bucs won 25-18, 25-18, 15-25, 25-11 in a Gopher Conference match at Waterville.

Ashlyn Pelant made 22 digs, and Josephine Volkmann made 25 digs. Claire Bohlen had 12 kills, one more than Alayna Atherton.

WEM (12-7, 5-2 in Gopher) plays in the St. Anthony Village tournament on Saturday.

Girls swimming & diving

Mankato East 82, Faribault 71: Emma Born, Kelsey Andresen and Avery Schuh each won two events in the Cougars' Big Nine victory at the East pool.

Born won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.09 and 100 backstroke in 1:07.53, Andresen took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:33.18 and 100 butterfly in 1:07.38, and Avery Schuh won the 100 freestyle in 56.97 and 50 freestyle in 25.50.

Madison Bomstad, Sophie Steindl, Andresen and Avery Schuh took first in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.92, and Born, Tiana Huynh, Brittan Hoffman and Cami Schuh won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:01.74.

Clare Braswell won the diving with 183.40, as did Huynh in the 500 freestyle in 6:05.17 and Steindl in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.18.
