Prep sports: Leonard headlines local performances at section swimming

LAKEVILLE — Olivia Leonard qualified for the state meet in four events, helping Mankato West to a second-place finish at the Section 1A girls swimming and diving meet Friday.

Northfield won the section championship with 459.5 points, with West placing second at 323. Mankato East was fourth at 239, and St. Peter took fifth at 220.

Leonard was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.40 and 100 breaststroke in 1:06.96

In the 200 medley relay, Leonard, Catherine Bittner, Ella Lee and Lucy Vogt placed first in 1:49.9. Lee, Jordan Woodford, Vogt and Leonard won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:42.7.

Lee also qualified for the state meet by taking second in the 100 butterfly in 58.61, and Vogt advanced with a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 24.81.

East's Avery Schuh qualified for the state meet in two events. She won the 50 freestyle in 24.67 and took third in the 100 freestyle in 54.23.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Cami Schuh, Brittan Hoffman, Emma Born and Avery Schuh qualified for the state meet, placing third in 1:42.16.

St. Peter's Hannah Denzer won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.37 and 500 freestyle in 5:10.56. She set pool records in both events.

The state meet begins Thursday at the University of Minnesota.

Girls hockey

East girls 4, Minnesota River 0: Jessica Eykyn, Ava Tibodeau, Laina Peterson and Kira Prange each scored a goal as the Cougars opened the season with a nonconference win at Le Sueur.

East plays Mankato West on Thursday at All Seasons Arena.

Mankato West 4, Fairmont 0: Penny Gorman scored two goals to help the Scarlets win a nonconference game on the road.

Tori Tosch and Anna Olsen each scored one goal, while Maree Zimmerman and Maleah Geusen each had two assists.

Alayna Smith made 20 saves.

West hosts Worthington on Tuesday.
