Prep roundup: Willmar Cardinal swimmers earn 7th place at Brainerd

Dec. 28—BRAINERD — The Willmar boys swimming and diving team finished seventh Thursday at the Brainerd Invitational.

Brainerd won the meet with 412 points, followed by Waconia's 377.5 and Monticello's 370.5. Willmar scored 139 points to place seventh of eight teams.

The Cardinals' had three sixth-place finishes. David Lammers and Jacob Loerzel were involved in two of them. He finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.63 seconds. He also swam one leg of the Cards' 200 freestyle relay team that finished sixth in 1:40.42. Alex Marcus, Ryan O"Meara and Loerzel swam legs.

Loerzel also finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.67.

Willmar's next scheduled meet is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Montevideo.

Four area wrestlers — two from Willmar and two from Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo — remain in championship contention after Day 1 of the Rumble on the Red at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.

For Willmar, Cavin Carlson and Conlan Carlson are both 3-0 and in the semifinals at 133 and 145 pounds, respectively. Cavin faces Marquis Richter of Mandan (N.D.) in the semis. Conlan faces Woodbury's Alex Braun in the semis. The two wrestled at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament on Dec. 16, where Braun won by tech fall.

For United, Dan Gunlogson is in the 139 semifinals and Brady Rhode is in the 285 semis. Gunlogson takes on Mora's Nathan Nelson. Rhode faces Coy Okeson of Bishop Ryan (N.D.).

United is seventh in the team standings with 60 points. Willmar is tied for 16th with 45 and New London-Spicer is tied for 26th with 33. There are 74 teams in the field.

Day 2 resumes at 9 a.m. Friday at the Fargodome.

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City used pins by Isaiah Renne at 215 pounds and Juan Cardenas at 285 to rally to beat Irondale at the Annandale/Maple Lake Invitational quadrangular.

Irondale, which also benefited from two forfeits, led 30-29 going into the 215-pound match that Renne won when he pinned Charles Sompon in 1 minute, 26 seconds. Cardenas then pinned Oliver Workman in 36 seconds.
