Prep Roundup: West's top three girls take top three spots at GNHSBC meet; Titans get mat tuneup before facing Trojans Wedneday

Jan. 6—TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City West Titans' top trio looked mighty good in Saturday's action at the Great Northwest High School Bowling Conference meet at Lucky Jack's.

The Titans' girls team is led by three top-tier bowlers, and they proved that Saturday as Taylor Phillips led all bowlers — girls and boys — with a high game of 266. Teammates Jordan LaFleur and Alyssa Tanner took second and third with a 232 and a 187, respectively.

Phillips and LaFleur are both seniors while Tanner is a junior, and the trio has sights set on conference, regional and state championship hardware. Check out next Sunday's Record-Eagle for a feature on the three stars.

West also picked up a team win against Traverse City Christian, tallying 27.5 points to the Sabres' 2.5 points. The other two high scorers for the girls were both from TC Christian as Naomi Elenbaas fired a 168 and Rebekah Burch rolled a 166.

On the boys side, Traverse City Central swept Elk Rapids 30-0, Bellaire toppled Frankfort 18-12, Cadillac knocked off Benzie Central by an 18-12 score as well, TC Christian beat Glen Lake 27-3, and the Titans of TC West swept away Mancelona by a 30-0 final.

In JV action for the boys, TC Central bested TC Christian 26-4, Cadillac took down Glen Lake 16-14, and Elk Rapids Black defeated Elk Rapids White 29-1.

High scorers for the boys included West's Cameron Baker (240, 209), Donte Reeves (223, 192), Cooper Phillips (191, 188) and Cole Doucette (188); TC Central's JJ Hintsala (219), Carter Banton (207, 205) and Noah Frank (186); TC Christian's Ethan Ehlert (199) and Josh Millward (189, 180); and Elk Rapids' Makai Wyatt (196) and Zach Cadwell (183).

Boyne City gets win at Gaylord Invite

GAYLORD — Boyne City began its regular season Saturday as the Ramblers' girls team picked up a win over the host Blue Devils, 24-6.

Boyne City played well as a team, rolling a high Baker game of 200. Individual high scorers for the Ramblers were Victoria McGeorge (163), Lauren LaBute (161), Whitney Root (150), Marlee Fischel (148) and Lillie Bennett (135).

"I am proud of their teamwork and being good competitors," Boyne City head coach Becky McGeorge said. "They really lifted both teams up and made this opener fun to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing what they bring to next week's match versus Rogers City and for the rest of the season."

Traverse City Bay Reps: The Division 3 third-ranked Bay Reps took a hard-fought battle to overtime against Division 2's top-ranked Byron Center, and walked away with the 3-3 tie on the road. Rowan Blain 1 goal, 1 assist; Thomas Boynton-Fisher 1 goal, 1 assist; Grant Lucas 1 goal; Ethan Coleman 1 assist.

Titans take 6th at Grand Haven tourney

GRAND HAVEN — The Traverse City West varsity wrestling team took sixth place out of 16 teams at Saturday's Adam Provincial Tournament in Grand Haven.

Matthew Quigley won an individual championship at 113 pounds, and Alex Reynolds took runner-up honors in the 126-pound bracket. Trapper Holmes also made the podium, taking third at 157 pounds.

Others placing for the Titans included Treyson Nyland in eighth at 106 pounds, 113 Finn O'Brien in seventh at 113 pounds, Bodyn Holmes in eighth at 138 pounds, Gabe Frost in eighth at 150 pounds, Logan Keller in fifth at 165 pounds, Nick Pawlowicz in sixth at 175 pounds, and 215 Brady Vaughan in fourth at 215 pounds.

In girls action, Anna Beers was the champion in the 130-pound bracket for the Titans.

Also for West, Annika Yuncker took second in 115 pounds, and Abby Dahl was also runner-up at 235 pounds. Abigail Farkas (125 pounds) and Alex Moeser (140 pounds) both took third place. In fourth place were Addison Geetings at 145 pounds, Adeline DeGood at 110 pounds, and Manny Viente Cadilla at 190 pounds. Brynn Smith took sixth at 155 pounds.

The Titans wrestle crosstown rivals Traverse City Central at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at West Senior High School.

Glads hit mat at New Lothrop

NEW LOTHROP — Traverse City St. Francis' varsity wrestling squad battled at New Lothrop on Saturday.

Tyler Sheeran, the No. 6 seed, secured a second-place finish with a 3-1 record. Luke Harper went 2-1 to finish fifth, and Cameron Sellers was 2-2 for the day, just missing the medal stand.

At Friday's JV tournament, four Gladiators went 3-1 and took home third-place honors, including Zackary Winowiecki, Ben Eckler, Josiah Finch and Garrell Russell. Dex Nance placed 4th.

Kingsley boys, girls in action Saturday

KINGSLEY — The Kingsley boys and girls team took to the mats Saturday as the boys wrestled in the Falcon Invitational at Allendale and the girls competed in the Buddy Invitational at Gladwin.

The boys saw a pair of Stags leave with individual championships as Nolan Hodges won at 132 pounds and Max Goethals took the title at 190 pounds. Caleb Bott nearly won a championship, taking second at 190 pounds.

Jonathan Pearson was third at 132 pounds, Tyler Unterbrink was fourth at 157 pounds, Isaiah Cosgrove was fourth at 165 pounds, and Lucas Bunning was fourth at 285 pounds.

For the girls, Macy Pierce went 1-3 at 125 pounds, Emily Bott was 1-3 at 140 pounds, and Adalene Chambers was 1-4 at 170 pounds.
