Prep roundup: Sigourney girls roll into regional semifinals
Feb. 15—LEON — Sigourney perfect 2024 has carried the Savages within two wins of the Class 1A Girls State Basketball Tournament.
The Savages stymied Melcher-Dallas early in the Region 3 quarterfinals on Tuesday night, jumping out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter before pulling in the second quarter with 23 points to open a 42-17 halftime lead. Double-doubles by Erin Dawson and Josephine Moore, along with an 18-point effort by Carly Goodwin, led Sigourney to a 60-42 win over the Saints.
Goodwin sank five of Sigourney's seven made shots from 3-point territory while dishing out a team-leading five assists. Dawson finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Moore scored 10 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Savages.
Sigourney hasn't lost a game since returning from the holiday break, carrying a 13-game winning streak into Friday night's Class 1A, Region 3 semifinal at fourth-ranked Martensdale-St. Mary's. The Savages haven't lost since a 41-29 loss at North Mahaska back on Dec. 21.
Sigourney (20-4) opened postseason play securing a second win this season over Pekin last Thursday in a 1A regional opener between Keokuk County rivals. The Savages forced the Panthers (6-16) into 31 turnovers during the contest.
Melcher-Dallas (18-4) advanced to face Sigourney with a 68-20 win over Bluegrass Conference rival Moulton-Udell. Addison Wadle led the Saints in their final win of the season with 26 points against the Eagles.
Rachel Ogden led M-U with 14 points. The Eagles end the season with a 1-18 record.
Chloe Glosser led Pekin with nine points at Sigourney. The Panthers finish with a record of 6-16.
Seymour 51, Moravia 22
SEYMOUR — The Mohawks were held without a field goal in the opening quarter of their Class 1A regional tournament opener with Bluegrass Conference rival Seymour, scoring just one point in the opening eight minutes against the Warriorettes.
Gracie Peck led Seymour to the win with 21 points. Olivia Power added a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win. Gabrielle Mitchell came off the bench to score 10 points against the Mohawks.
Moravia ends the season with a record of 4-16.
No. 13 (3A) Chariton 66, Centerville 30
CHARITON — Tatyana Allen-Winston led a balanced attack for the 13th-ranked Chargers, scoring 19 points while pulling in 10 rebounds for a double-double against the Redettes in a postseason battle of South Central Conference foes.
Addie McGee added 17 points, shooting 5-8 from the field including 3-5 from 3-point range. Mckenzie Snook added 14 points and a game-high eight steals as the Chargers finished with 28 steals as a team during the contest.
Chariton advanced to the Class 3A regional finals with a 55-33 win over Mid-Prairie. The 13th-ranked Chargers (20-3) will travel to No. 4 Solon (20-3) on Saturday night to decide a berth in the Iowa High School Girls State Basketball Tournament.
Centerville ends the season with a record of 2-19.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mid-Prairie 68, Cardinal 53
WELLMAN — Bryce Henry led a balanced attack by the Golden Hawks in a Class 2A, District 9 quarterfinals scoring 21 points as the Hawks held off a stellar shooting performance from Alec Rachford and the Comets.
Rachford, playing his final game for the Cardinal boys basketball team, sank five of the team's 11 made 3-pointers finishing with a team-leading 17 points. Mason Grove added 12 points, hitting 4-9 shots from 3-point range, while Gave Ware added 10 points and a team-leading four blocks for the Comets.
Brady Weber narrowly missed out on a triple-double for Mid-Prairie, scoring 18 points while dishing out nine assists and pulling in nine rebounds. Ace Peck added 16 points and seven of Mid-Prairie's 15 steals.
Cardinal finishes the season with a record of 1-22.
Mediapolis 75, Van Buren County 38
MEDIAPOLIS — Will Cocherell closed out his first season for the Warriors scoring a team-leading 16 points in a Class 2A, District 7 loss to the Bulldogs.
Izaak Loeffler added 15 points for Van Buren County. Mediapolis pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 52-22 over the final 16 minutes.
Van Buren County closes out the season with a final record of 5-17.
North Mahaska 93, Moulton-Udell 23
NEW SHARON — Gabe Hora led the Warhawks with 20 points while Nate Sampson added a double-double with 11 points and 13 assists in a Class 1A, District 10 quarterfinal win over the Eagles.
Adrian Smith added a double-double off the bench for North Mahaska, scoring 12 points while grabbing a team-leading 11 rebounds. Nolan Anderson narrowly missed out on a double-double, scoring 18 points while hauling in nine rebounds for the Warhawks.
Moulton-Udell finishes the season with a record of 8-10. The Eagles produced their winningest season since 2018 after entering the season having lost 78 consecutive games.
WACO 57, Pekin 42
WAYLAND — Isaac Rich's late 3-pointer helped the Warriors close out a Class 1A, District 9 quarterfinal win over Pekin with a final 11-0 run after the Panthers had cut WACO's lead to 40-36.
Colton Leichty led WACO with 26 points in the win while Chase Waterhouse added 16 points, hitting all seven shots from the field. JaeDon Wolver led the Panthers with 13 points while Sven Dahlstrom scored 12 points on four made 3-pointers.
Pekin ends the season with a record of 10-11.
Danville 62, Sigourney 52
SIGOURNEY — Carson Ourth led the Bears to a Class 1A, District 9 win over the Savages, narrowly missing out on a perfect shooting night hitting 11 of 12 field goal attempts as part of a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double effort.
Jaden Bauer added 16 points and eight rebounds for Danville. Titus Svoboda scored 15 points while dishing out a team-leading seven assists and collecting a team-leading four steals.
Sigourney finishes a winning season at 13-9. The Savages will return every member of the team next season.
"Danville is a really talented team," Sigourney head coach Mitch Eslick said. "We have a phenomenal group of young men who made big strides from November to now. With no seniors on this team, I'm anxious to what's next for this group."
