Prep roundup: Pinckney's Paul Moore runs school-record 1,600 in Canton

Riley Hough of Hartland is universally recognized as the greatest distance runner to come out of Livingston County, but there’s room for debating the rest of the pecking order.

Pinckney senior Paul Moore is certainly in that conversation.

Moore became the second-fastest 1,600-meter runner in county history Thursday with his time of 4 minutes, 13.48 seconds in the Distance Night Under the Lights at The Park on the Canton High School track.

Moore broke the school record of 4:14.06 set by Ian Boyle when he finished second in the 2005 state Division 1 meet.

Boyle’s time was the county record until Hough broke it at regionals in 2021. Hough lowered the mark to 4:04.95 at the Barnyard Invite in Romeo on April 29, 2022 on his way to a state Division 1 championship.

Moore’s performance came 20 days after his time of 8:59.63 ranked him third in county history in the 3,200 behind Hough and former Pinckney teammate Caleb Jarema.

Pinckney had three of the top four runners out of 113 finishers in the 1,600. Evan Loughridge was second in 4:22.16 and Zach Newman was fourth in 4:26.32.

Howell’s Jack MacGregor nearly broke the county freshman record with his fifth-place time of 4:27.28. Hough ran 4:27.15 in 2019. Howell’s Lucas Wood was sixth in 4:32.54.

Pinckney junior Jim Rochowiak won the 800 in 1:58.87. James Uphouse was third in 1:59.80 and Parker Hays fifth in 2:01.15 for the Pirates. MacGregor was seventh in 2:01.98, with Howell’s Drake Wallace placing eighth in 2:02.04.
