PREP ROUNDUP: Effingham, St. Anthony girls cross-country finishes second at regional meets; Teutopolis girls tennis places in a tie for 10th at state

Oct. 23—OLNEY — The Effingham girls cross-country team finished second and the boys finished seventh at the Class 1A Olney (Richland County) Regional on Saturday.

Effingham finished with 64 points.

Jessica Larsen was fifth at 19:14.60; Baylee Summers was seventh at 19:31.19; Drew Weis was 16th at 20:44.47; Morgan Springer was 17th at 20:44.68; Audrey Wagoner was 19th at 20:46.49; Haddie Hill was 21st at 21:01.25 and Kyra Hazelton was 32nd at 21:43.97.

As for the boys, they finished with 181 points.

Alex Gordon finished eighth at 16:28.03; Adam Flack was 29th at 17:20.83; Aaron Hill was 37th at 17:47.57; Ino Mapes was 46th at 18:19.61 and Evan Klingler was 64th at 19:53.78.

North Clay also competed.

The boys finished 11th with 311 points.

Zane Groves was 41st at 17:59.50; Cooper Givens was 66th at 20:10.73; Wyatt Pritchard was 68th at 20:46.33; Hunter Webb-Ord was 69th at 21:16.40 and Ethan Gibbons was 76th at 22:11.80.

As for the girls, Brooke Koelm was 38th at 22:11.20, Maddie Ayers was 69th at 28:37.64 and Samantha Westendorf was 72nd at 33:24.62.

Class 1A Fairfield Regional

St. Anthony finished second in the girls race and Newton won the boys at the Class 1A Fairfield Regional on Saturday.

St. Anthony finished with 51 points.

Isabella Keller won at 18:27.9; Aubrey Denning was second at 21:11.5; Stacie Vonderheide was fourth at 21:51.4; Emma Helmink was 15th at 23:31.4; Grace Niebrugge was 37th at 27:36.6 and Ava Faber was 44th at 29:27.6.

Newton finished fourth with 102 points, Neoga was fifth with 122, Dieterich was sixth with 135 and Teutopolis was seventh with 166.

For Newton, Layna Marshall was sixth at 22:00.7; Natalie Kistner was 27th at 25:43.7; Shay Bennett was 28th at 25:46.9; Lily Yager was 30th at 26:16.6 and Kate Bierman was 31st at 26:59.1.

For Neoga, Libby McGinnis was 22nd at 24:51.2; Lexie Fletcher was 26th at 25:21.2; Addison Mast was 29th at 25:51.6; Annie Clark was 32nd at 27:08.8; Atalie Osborn was 39th at 27:49.5; Megan Baker was 51st at 31:46.3 and Natalie Beaumont was 52nd at 32:18.8.

For Dieterich, Adriana Gordon was 23rd at 24:57.1; Ella Kreke was 25th at 25:21.1; Addison Miller was 36th at 27:34.5; Callie Faller was 38th at 27:40.7; Makenna French was 41st at 28:36.1 and Marli Michl was 43rd at 29:07.2.

Lastly, for Teutopolis, Pearl Huber was 34th at 27:22.7; Mary Jane Dennis was 35th at 27:26.9; Ella Neihls was 40th at 28:12.6; Elaina Gaffin was 42nd at 28:46.4; Maddie Zane was 47th at 30:24.9 and Claire Overbeck was 53rd at 32:23.3.

Altamont also competed.

Krista Hall was 20th at 24:26.8; Makayla Sidwell was 48th at 31:04.9 and Katie Tedrick was 49th at 31:05.3.

As for the boys, Newton won with 57 points. Cumberland was second with 87, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was third with 88, Dieterich was seventh with 179, Teutopolis was eighth with 209 and Altamont was 10th with 258.

For Newton, Luke Weber was seventh at 18:31.7; Brock Probst was 10th at 18:48.8; Hayden Borgic was 12th at 19:28.1; Isaac Street was 13th at 19:33.1; Jackson Sornberger was 15th at 19:44.3; Tanner Whitaker was 18th at 19:57.3 and Wade Ochs was 32nd at 20:44.1.

For Cumberland, Cameron Roedl was third at 17:44.1; Riley Morgan was ninth at 18:46.9; Zack Buescher was 21st at 20:12.5; Kade Bradley was 24th at 20:33.1; Kaleb Bierman was 31st at 20:44; Cole Margenthaler was 39th at 21:25.8 and Sawyer Wellbaum was 58th at 23:15.6.

For Cowden, August Cosart was sixth at 18:22.3; Griffin Vaughn was 11th at 18:52.9; Aiden Wallace was 16th at 19:48.3; Hayden Sarver was 20th at 20:10.5; Porter Lilly was 37th at 21:11.5 and Drake Richards was 56th at 23:06.8.

For Dieterich, Trevor Crutcher was 14th at 19:35.9; Kaden Einhorn was 35th at 20:51.8; Trevor Niemerg was 43rd at 21:41.9; Tanner Niemerg was 48th at 22:07.3; Gabe Jackson was 49th at 22:15.9; Gavin French was 52nd at 22:42.2 and Cody Landers was 54th at 22:56.7.

For Teutopolis, James Hughey was 38th at 21:17.3; Nicholas Waldhoff was 40th at 21:30.2; Luke Dennis was 41st at 21:35.5; Oliver Lee was 42nd at 21:37.6 and Will Deters was 62nd at 24:39.

Lastly, for Altamont, Aiden Rosales was 44th at 21:51.4; Juan Fulk was 45th at 21:52.8; Lane Spring was 57th at 23:08.1; Andrew Ellersick was 67th at 25:53.9 and Jackson Sharp was 69th at 27:24.3.

GIRLS TENNIS

Class 1A State Final

Teutopolis finished tied for 10th as a team at the Class 1A State Final on Saturday.

Olivia Hemmen and Anna Probst defeated LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy's Layden Almer and Audrey Moster (6-0, 6-3) in the third round, fell to Elmhurst Timothy Christian's Crystina Lee and Jane Carter (1-6, 0-6) in the quarterfinals, defeated Jerseyville Jersey's Tessa Crawford and Elise Noble (8-6) in the consolation quarterfinals and fell to Lisle Benet Academy's Natalie Grover and Katie Jendra (3-6, 2-6) in the consolation semifinals.

Julian Hemmen fell to Wheaton St. Francis' Ashley Rajcevich (2-6, 0-6) in the consolation second round and Abbie Lee fell to Danville Schlarman's Maya Jenny (1-6, 1-6) in the same round.

As for St. Anthony, the Bulldogs finished in a tie for 16th.

Emily Kowalke defeated Lily Gregory (6-1, 7-5) in the consolation second round and fell to Chicago Morgan Park Academy's Juanita Smith (5-8) in the consolation third round.

Mia Kinkelaar and Ellie Link fell to Chicago University's Tara Sawhney and Isabela Ji (6-7 (8), 6-3, 0-6) in the third round, defeated Troy Triad's Katie Watts and Anna D'Aunoy (8-3) in the consolation fourth round and lost to Winnetka North Shore Country Day's Charlotte Graham and Anna Beth Woolf (3-8) in the consolation fifth round.

VOLLEYBALL

Effingham (St. Anthony) at Mahomet-Seymour Tournament

The St. Anthony Bulldogs went 3-2 at the Mahomet-Seymour Tournament on Saturday.

St. Anthony defeated Mattoon (25-15, 25-16), Pana (25-13, 25-15) and Fairbury (Prairie Central) (25-17, 25-18) and lost to Chatham (Glenwood) (25-10, 15-25, 12-15) and Quincy (21-25, 28-26, 18-20).

Andrea Rudolphi earned a spot on the Mahomet-Seymour Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Altamont 2, Buffalo (Tri-City) 0

The Altamont Lady Indians defeated Buffalo (Tri-City) in two sets at the Pawnee Tournament on Saturday.

Altamont won the first 25-21 and the second 25-20.

Peyton Osteen had one ace, two kills, five digs and 19 assists. Grace Lemke had four kills, one assist and two blocks. Makaylee Splechter had one kill and four digs. Della Berg had two aces, four kills and five digs. Kylie Osteen had one ace, three kills and four blocks. Brianna Grunloh had six digs and one assist. Maya Moore had 10 kills and three digs. Ella Nelson had five digs and Laila Hankins had three digs.

Springfield (Calvary) 2, Altamont 0

Altamont fell to Springfield (Calvary) in two sets at the Pawnee Tournament.

Peyton Osteen had two kills, five digs and 19 assists. Lemke had four kills and two digs. Splechter had one dig and two assists. Berg had one ace, three kills and three digs. Kylie Osteen had three kills. Grunloh had seven digs. Moore had six kills and four digs. Riley Rippetoe had three kills and one dig and Hankins had one dig.

Taylorville 2, Altamont 0

Altamont fell to Taylorville in two sets at the Pawnee Tournament.

Altamont lost the first set 15-25 and the second 22-25.

Peyton Osteen had one kill, four digs and 21 assists. Lemke had five kills and three blocks. Splechter had six kills, three digs and one assist. Berg had three kills, five digs and one block. Kylie Osteen had two kills and two blocks. Grunloh had six digs. Moore had two kills. Rippetoe had three kills, one dig and two blocks and Hankins had three digs.

Altamont 2, Buffalo (Tri-City) 1

Altamont defeated Buffalo (Tri-City) in three sets at the Pawnee Tournament.

Altamont lost the first set 21-25, won the second 25-23 and won the third 10-6.

Peyton Osteen had three aces, two kills, three digs, 24 assists and two blocks. Lemke had eight kills, one dig and two blocks. Splechter had three kills, one dig and two assists. Berg had one ace, six kills, six digs and one block. Kylie Osteen had four kills and four blocks. Grunloh had nine digs. Moore had five kills and one block. Nelson had three digs and Hankins had three digs.

Nokomis 2, Altamont 0

Altamont fell to Nokomis in two sets at the Pawnee Tournament.

Altamont lost the first set 10-25 and the second 18-25.

Peyton Osteen had one kill, five digs and 12 assists. Lemke had four kills and two blocks. Splechter had one kill, one dig and four assists. Berg had four kills and five digs. Kylie Osteen had one ace, two kills and one block. Grunloh had one kill, six digs and two blocks and Moore had three kills and one dig.

Centralia (Christ Our Rock Lutheran) 2, Farina (South Central) 1

The South Central Lady Cougars defeated Centralia (Christ Our Rock Lutheran) in three sets on Wednesday.

South Central lost the first set 24-26, won the second 25-15 and lost the third 13-25.

Emma Runge had six digs. Reagan Roberts had 16 assists and four digs. Emma Chambers had six kills, five digs and one ace. Brooke Cowger had seven kills, two digs, three aces and one block. Emma Jenne had 11 kills and one block. Megan Yates had two kills and eight digs. Kyra Swift had six digs. Lauren Johnson had one kill and one assist and River Yingst had seven assists, three digs and two aces.

FOOTBALL

Newton 40, Marshall 28

The Newton Eagles defeated Marshall on Friday, 40-28.

Newton rushed for 312 yards on 47 carries.

Meyer Tarr had 264 yards rushing on 36 carries and four touchdowns. Cole Phillips had 28 yards rushing on six carries. Evan Zumbahlen had 20 yards rushing on two carries and Drake Wolf had six yards rushing on one carry.

Max Meinhart threw for 150 yards on 5-of-8 passing and two touchdowns.

Zumbahlen caught two passes for 127 yards and two scores. Gus Bierman had one catch for 14 yards and Payton Harris had two catches for nine yards.

Defensively, Dexter Fulton had three tackles. Tarr had two. Landen McClure had seven. Zumbahlen had two. Bierman had nine. Logan Ochs had eight. Phillips and Wolf each had four. Evan Baltzell had three. Kohlten Barthelme had one. Cole Elmore had 12 and Isaac Rake and Harris each had two.

Toledo (Cumberland) 40, Argenta-Oreana 0

The Cumberland Pirates defeated Argenta-Oreana on Friday, 40-0.

Blake McMechan had 10 carries for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Braydon Olmstead had six carries for 73 yards and passed for 138 yards on 8-of-12 and three touchdowns. Grant Keyser had six carries for 31 yards. Logan Gerhardt had two carries for 19 yards. Kelby Bierman had one carry for nine yards. Logan Aaron had one carry for five yards and Chace Farr had four carries for four yards.

Zack Harmon added two catches for 51 yards. Bierman had four catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. McMechan had one catch for 23 yards and one touchdown and Keyser had one catch for 17 yards and one touchdown.
