Prep Roundup: Benzie Central moves on to states; TC Central hockey claims BNC

Feb. 14—ROSCOMMON — Wednesday was a great night to be a wrestler on the Benzie Central varsity wrestling team.

"Today is a good day to be a Husky," Benzie Central wrestling coach Josh Lovendusky said.

The Huskies continued their dominating season in Roscommon for the Division 4 team regionals by sweeping Mancelona 81-0 in the semifinals and took down Roscommon 67-12 in the regional finals to move onto the D4 state rounds for the second year in a row.

"Everyone is jacked up and pumped with a celebration at the end," Lovendusky said. "It was nice to have all the kids sing the fight song together and have everyone together."

The seniors guided the dog pack to a return to D4 state rounds — even if some wrote them off. The Huskies embraced being the underdog this season, planning matches against some of the best teams in the state to prepare for who they could face in the postseason.

Their challenging schedule primed the team for the postseason, with Lovendusky going as far as to say their backup team could've won regionals Wednesday.

"I say that knowing that every kid in that room works their tail off, and I know how competitive all the kids are," Lovendusky said. "I truly believe that if all the seniors weren't in the lineup today, we still could've won regionals."

Dane Gillison (113 pounds), Benjamin DeRidder (120), Cambrie Lawrence (126), Nathan Higgins (132), Jacob Gillison (138), Joseph Morse (144), Owen Cruden (150), Dalton Geetings (157), Tyrone Brouillet (165), Conner Wenkel (175), Danny Wallington (190), Lane Sanchez (215) and Ryan Kincaid (285) all collected two wins. Cage Edingfield (106) finished the night 1 — 1.

Before the Huskies compete in the D4 state quarterfinals on Feb 23, 14 wrestlers are competing in individual regionals Saturday at Charlevoix.
