Prep report: Hilltoppers boys start fast, blank Red Lake Falls

Dec. 26—Four different Duluth Marshall players scored in the first period as the Hilltoppers rolled past Red Lake Falls 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine, Minnesota on Tuesday.

All four goals for the Hilltoppers in the frame came in a span of 6:48 toward the end of the period, starting with a goal from Bennett Scissons at 8:52. Benson Peterson, Pacey Adduono and Kyler Black struck in quick succession, turning it from 1-0 with three and a half minutes left in the period to 4-0 with one minute left.

Mason Musel added a goal in the second period as the Hilltoppers held a shot advantage of 2-to-1 or better in all three periods, finishing ahead 40-16 in that category.

Layton Anderson had two assists for Marshall, while Kaenan Smith made 16 saves.

Marshall (5-3-1) will meet Two Rivers, a 4-0 winner over Simley, in Wednesday's semifinals.

The Bluejackets turned a third-period power play into a go-ahead goal on Tuesday, as Kelin Elsner's goal 3:47 into the frame held up as a game-winner in an afternoon quarterfinal at the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic in Blaine.

Hibbing/Chisholm fell behind 2-0 early but pulled one back via Jace Kampsula with 2:05 left in the first period. After a scoreless second period, Jackson Strukel tied the game at 2:03, then assisted Elsner's goal 1:44 later for his third point of the day.

Gavin Lamphere backstopped Hibbing/Chisholm to the win, making 27 saves. Isaiah Hildebrand contributed two assists.

The Bluejackets (8-4) will face Gentry Academy in the first semifinal Wednesday in Blaine.

The Hilltoppers controlled play against their Wisconsin opponents, holding the Raiders to eight shots, all of which Ray Anderson stopped for Marshall.

Ilsa Lindaman continued her offensive rampage with two goals and two assists. Through 15 games, the St. Thomas commit is averaging more than two goals and three points per game.

She had a little help on Tuesday, as Eva Etter scored twice, the first multi-goal game of the senior defenseman's career.

The Hilltoppers will face Luverne on Wednesday in one semifinal in the varsity Gold bracket.

A four-goal second period for the Trojans sunk the Duluth Northern Stars in the quarterfinals of the Gold Bracket at the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic in Blaine on Tuesday.

The Trojans blitzed the Northers Stars by scoring four goals in 53 seconds to take control of the game.

Mae McCall had a shorthanded consolation goal for Duluth late in the period, but both Nicole Britz and Jenna Britz scored their second goals of the game in the third period to seal it.

Ella Brisbois made 24 saves for the Northern Stars (5-9), who meet Mounds View/Irondale on Wednesday.

Berkley Hoff scored first and last for the Storm, as they advanced in the Silver bracket at the Herb Brooks Holiday Classic.

The Storm were outshot 23-15 for the game, but Hoff put them ahead at 4:19 of the first period. Katie Carpenter made it 2-0 on North Shore's only recorded shot of the second period, while Reese Costley scored in the first minute of the third frame before Raegan Hogenson and Hoff scored empty-netters.

Costley added two assists and goaltender Harper Powell made 22 saves.

North Shore meets Northern Tier in a semifinal on Wednesday in Blaine.

Cairin Berger scored 17 points and made three of her team's seven 3-pointers as Esko won in the semifinals of the Esko Coaches Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

Esko put the clamps on after holding just a 29-26 halftime lead, allowing Foley to score just 15 points after the break.

Hannah Swanson added 12 points for Esko.

The Hawks got 21 points from Olivia Johnson but were outlasted in double overtime in their semifinal at the Esko Coaches Classic on Tuesday afternoon in Esko.

Hermantown led 27-21 at halftime, but the teams finished regulation tied at 47, then both scored nine points in the first extra session before Kennedy won the endgame 9-4.

Bailey Zagelmeyer added 12 points and Bailey Hermanson 10 for Hermantown (2-8).

Brooks Johnson dropped 40 points for the Hilltoppers as they held on and advanced to the championship game of the Esko Coaches Classic on Tuesday in Esko.

Marshall took a 45-33 lead into halftime, which made up for being outscored 35-28 in the second half.

Marshall will face host Esko in the championship game on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. after Esko routed Hinckley-Finlayson 93-39. Stats were not available.
