Prep report: East boys hockey salvages tie at Blaine

Dec. 30—Three goals in the third period, the last of them coming on a penalty shot with eight seconds remaining by Noah Teng, helped Duluth East salvage a 4-4 tie in a Section 7AA matchup with Blaine on Saturday at Fogerty Arena.

The Greyhounds found themselves down 3-0 after one period and 4-1 after two against a Bengals team that entered the game 1-10 on the season, but overturned the deficit with the help of a 27-1 shot advantage in the third period.

Thomas Gunderson scored twice to get East within a goal before Teng, who assisted both goals, scored the equalizer.

Blaine had 9-7 shot advantage in the overtime period but neither side found a goal.

Kole Kronstedt made 26 saves for East, while Landon Palmgren stopped 52 shots for Blaine.

Caiden Carpenter scored and Derek Gibeau made 26 saves as the Raiders skated to a tie with Park Rapids on Saturday at Hodgins-Berardo Arena in Coleraine.

Carpenter scored early in the second period, but Greenway's attempt to finish off the win was foiled by a power play goal from the Panthers' Jeron Pinoniemi with 5:08 remaining.

Hudson's Andy Hanson set two pool records as his team won the Head of the Lakes Border Battle swim meet in Superior on Saturday by a narrow margin over Duluth, 434-422.

Hanson lowered the marks in the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 59.71 seconds) and 100 butterfly (51.23).

Duluth won four events, Landon West in the 100 backstroke (56.90), Seiji Sudoh in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.72), Cale Bortnem in diving, and the 400 free relay team (3:24.46).

Host Superior finished fourth with 319 points.

The Hilltoppers "held" Providence star Maddyn Greenway to 26 points, but four other players scored in double figures as the defending AA state champion Lions roared at the Granite City Classic game played at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota.

In addition to 26 from Greenway, one of the top 2026 recruits in the Midwest, Ari Peterson scored 17 and Brooke Hohenecker 14.

Marshall got a huge 36 points from Chloe Johnson, a 2028 prospect, but no one else had more than eight as the Hilltoppers fell to 5-4.

The Greyhounds picked up their second victory of the season and split a pair of games this weekend at Owatonna High School's holiday tournament.

East (2-4) lost 103-78 to Blaine on Friday night.

The Greyhounds play their next five games and 10 of their next 11 either at home or in Duluth, Hermantown or Superior.

The Bluestreaks got as many points from Ethan Lauzon, 28, as South Ridge got from its whole team and picked up a win to close out the Chisholm holiday tournament on Saturday.
