Beautiful weather brought out the best in the boys golf teams from Ida and Monroe Thursday.

“We finally got to play in good weather,” Monroe coach Ernie Sellers said. “That’s a good thing.”

Monroe shot a season-best round of 157 to beat Ann Arbor Pioneer by 14 strokes in a Southeastern Conference Red tri meet at Carrington Golf Club. Ypsilanti Lincoln rounded out the field with a 201.

Ida, meanwhile, took the championship of the Onsted Invitational with a round of 362 at Devil’s Lake.

Blue Streak coach Jeremy Potter says his team has been on a steady ascent all season.

“We’ve tended to start a little slower the last few years,” he said. “We’ve gotten more consistent as the season has gone on.

“The team has really been getting smarter on the course. They are not taking chances they shouldn’t take. They are managing the course very well.”

Kyle Pafford led Monroe with 36 while Brenden McCullough shot 38, Christian Koszka-Lombardo 40, and Aiden Coury 43.

“Hopefully our guys are peaking at the right time,” Sellers said. “Obviously Monday will be a big deal with the County Championships. We are the defending champions.”

Pafford seems to be finding his stroke.

“He’s been struggling,” Sellers said. “He spent an hour and a half on a simulator before practice the other day.”

Davin Slater (83) and Zack Bailey (88) made the all-tournament team for Ida, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.

Rounding out the scorecard for the Blue Streaks were Ty Robertson with 94 and Wade Johnston with 95.

“This was Ida’s first-ever Onsted Invitational win,” Potter said.

Dunee placed sixth with 389. Jack Salenbien (93) and Carter Bahn (96) led the Vikings.

Both Ida and Monroe will play in the Monroe County Championships at Carrington on Monday. The teams tee off at 9 a.m.

Bedford stumbles

TEMPERANCE – Bedford finished at 11-2 in the Southeastern Conference after dropping its league finale 157-169 to Chelsea at Bedford Hills Thursday.

Carter Klawonn led the Mules with 39 while Cam Price and Spencer Eighmey both finished at 41.

The junior varsity team also fell 178-201. Brady Bischoff shot 49.

Summerfield third

ADRIAN – Summerfield shot 202 to take third in a Tri-County Conference jamboree at Woodlawn Thursday.

Adrian Madison won the event with 165. Erie Mason finished sixth with 224.
