Prep football roundup for Sept. 15: Canistota wins road matchup over Elks, improves to 5-0

Sep. 15—ELKTON, S.D. — In a meeting of ranked nine-man unbeatens, Canistota took an early lead and never trailed, knocking off Elkton-Lake Benton 24-12 on Friday night.

Class 9A's top-ranked Hawks opened the scoring with a 2-yard run by Cayden Scott to take an 8-0 lead after a successful two-point conversion just over three minutes into the game.

ELB, ranked No. 4 in Class 9AA, responded in the second quarter on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Colt Beck to pull within 8-6 after an unsuccessful two-point try. But that's as close as the Elks would come.

Canistota added eight more points on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Tage Ortman to Ty Doblar with less than a minute to play before halftime and widened the lead to 24-6 after an 11-yard Scott touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Beck added a second touchdown rush, this time from five yards, for the Elks.

Canistota (5-0) returns home for a meeting with Hanson on Sept. 22, while ELB (4-1) visits Iroquois/Lake Preston on Sept. 22.

CORSICA, S.D. — Waylon Bolle scored the first four touchdowns of the game, powering Corsica-Stickney to a home victory over Burke on Friday night in nine-man football action.

Bolle scored on touchdown runs of 69, 53 and 84 yards, plus caught an 84-yard touchdown pass from Carter Wright to stake the Jaguars to a 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bolle finished with 214 yards on eight carries. Wright also had a 23-yard touchdown run and Tate Tolsma scored on two touchdown runs from 38 and six yards out. Tolsma had 80 yards on eight carries and led C-S in tackles with 10, and Wright rushed for 62 yards and threw for 99 more in the game.

The Cougars scored with an 18-yard touchdown catch for Bryce Bartling in the third quarter and Kaleb Schonebaum tallied an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth period. Gentry Bartling finished as Burke's leading rusher with 79 yards on 14 carries.

Corsica-Stickney (4-1) will travel on Sept. 22 to play at Avon. Burke (0-5) is off next week and will host Irene-Wakonda on Sept. 29.

FREEMAN, S.D. — Howard scored the first 20 points and rushed for 311 yards on 33 carries in a road victory over Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy on Friday night in nine-man football action.

For Class 9AA No. 3 Howard, Taiden Hoyer had 124 yards rushing on eight carries, plus three passing touchdowns as part of a 6-for-9, 127-yard day passing. Jackson Remmers rushed seven times for 102 yards and a touchdown, and Tate Miller, Karsyn Feldhaus and Kade Grocott all added rushing touchdowns. Luke Koepsell caught three passes — two for touchdowns — and had 86 yards receiving, and Weston Remmers caught a 16-yard touchdown pass for the Tigers. Koepsell also had two sacks on defense.

FMFA was led by Karter Weber, who was 23-for-34 passing for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing 10 times for 64 yards and a score. Rocky Ammann caught eight passes for 71 yards and Christopher Aasen and Luke Peters both caught touchdown passes for the Phoenix.

Howard (4-1) will next be in action at Irene-Wakonda on Sept. 22. FMFA (3-1) travels west to Colome for a game on Sept. 22.

PARKSTON, S.D. — Class 9AA No. 1 Parkston scored 30 points in the first quarter and did not slow down in the second period, blanking visiting Oldham-Ramona-Rutland in a nine-man contest on Friday night. The game was ended at halftime via the 50-point rule.

Mason Jervik had two carries that both went for touchdowns and finished with 93 yards. Gage Jodozi rushed for 73 yards on two carries and Luke Bormann had a 29-yard touchdown run and a 26-yard touchdown catch from Carter Sommer. Brody Boettcher added a 33-yard touchdown catch from Sommer, Reco Muilenburg had a touchdown run and Jaron Nesheim had a 51-yard punt return for a score for Parkston.

On defense, Maddux Brissette had a team-best seven tackles for the Trojans and Will Jodozi and Brody Boettcher had five tackles and a sack each.

Parkston (5-0) will play on Sept. 22 at Garretson, while ORR (0-4) will host Dell Rapids St. Mary on Sept. 22.

AVON, S.D. — Noah Watchorn's short touchdown plunge with 3 1/2 minutes left proved to be a game-winner for Avon, as the Class 9B No. 4-ranked Pirates earned a hard-fought Homecoming victory over defending state champion and No. 3-ranked Hitchcock-Tulare.

The Pirates stopped H-T's final threat of the game, a fourth-down at the Avon 40-yard line with less than a minute to play. Thanks to a 37-yard Trace Pelton touchdown catch and run, Avon led 26-12 going to the fourth quarter before Hitchcock-Tulare made a late charge.

Aziah Meyer finished with 98 rushing yards on 13 carries to lead Avon, including scoring runs of 29 and 41 yards. Noah Watchorn added 55 yards on the ground and what ended up as the game-winning 3-yard touchdown. Paxton Bierema went 3-for-4 passing for 46 yards and one touchdown.

Avon (4-1) will host Corsica-Stickney in Avon on Sept. 22. Hitchcock-Tulare (3-2) heads to Sunshine Bible Academy in Miller on Sept. 22.

IRENE, S.D. — Gregory scored 36 points in fewer than 10 minutes of game time to open Friday's nine-man road contest at Irene-Wakonda and cruised to a road victory.

For Gregory, Luke Stukel had a 17-yard touchdown run, Landon Keiser added a 45-yard touchdown run and Rylan Peck scored from 20 yards out for the first of three total touchdowns he had a hand in at the quarterback position. Cruz Klundt caught a pair of touchdown passes from Rylan Peck from 22 and 35 yards out. Eli Ekroth had a 7 yard touchdown run and Jhett Eklund had a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that ended the game due to the 50-point rule.

Gregory (2-2) will host Kimball/White Lake on Sept. 22, while Irene-Wakonda (0-4) will welcome Howard to town on Sept. 22.

FORT PIERRE, S.D. — Bon Homme went on the road and knocked Stanley County from the ranks of the unbeatens in Class 9AA football with a Friday afternoon victory.

Landon Schmidt ran for three touchdowns for the Cavaliers, with scores from 3, 7 and 38 yards out. He finished with 153 yards on 22 carries, while Jackson Caba had 82 yards on 19 carries, including a 17-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, helping Bon Homme to nearly 300 yards on the ground.

Stanley County did all of its scoring in the fourth quarter, with a Barret Schweitzer 21-yard touchdown pass from Broch Zeeb, a 2-yard Zeeb scoring run and a Paxton Deal 49-yard touchdown catch from Zeeb to get within six points with 53 seconds left but the Cavaliers covered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

Bon Homme (1-3) hosts Platte-Geddes on Sept. 22 in Tyndall, while Stanley County (3-1) will play at White River on Sept. 22.

MENNO, S.D. — Scotland/Menno broke through on Friday night for its first high school football win of the season, blanking Baltic in an 11-man football game.

Izayah Ulmer threw two touchdown passes as part of a 12-for-23 passing effort for 216 yards. He found Logan Sayler from 11 yards out in the first quarter and Kory Keppen from 20 yards out late in the first half to close the scoring for the game. In between, Bryce Sattler had a 5-yard touchdown run for the Trappers. Sayler finished with 79 yards on three catches, while Sattler had 74 yards on four receptions. Jayce Walloch was the Trappers' leading rusher with 50 yards on 12 carries and he forced three fumbles on defense.

Scotland/Menno (1-4) returns to action on Sept. 22 when it hosts Wagner in Scotland. Baltic (0-5) will host Parker on Sept. 22.

ELK POINT, S.D. — Class 11B No. 4 Elk Point-Jefferson pulled away in the second half from McCook Central/Montrose for a home victory.

Keaton Gale had 97 yards on 15 carries for the Huskies and a 33-yard touchdown run, while throwing for 96 yards and a touchdown pass to Ashton Fairbanks. Garrett Merkley had a 48-yard touchdown run to account for a large share of a 70-yard rushing day. Carson Timmins had an 11-yard touchdown run for EPJ, which also picked up a interception for a touchdown from Evan Fornia.

MCM's Mason Sabers caught five passes for 34 yards, including a touchdown pass from Lane Deutch, who threw for 101 yards. Ty Morrison had seven catches for 57 yards for the Fighting Cougars, while Carter Randall rushed for 26 yards on 11 carries.

EPJ (3-1) will play at Flandreau on Sept. 22 and MCM (1-4) will host Sioux Valley in Salem on Sept. 22.

GETTYSBURG, S.D. — A big effort on the ground powered Kimball/White Lake to a road victory over Potter County on Friday night for a nine-man football victory.

Iden Myers led the Wildkats in rushing with 263 yards and three touchdowns, while Gavin Braun added 121 yards on the ground and a score. Lucas Lenz had a 31-yard receiving touchdown and Blake Leiferman added a nine-yard touchdown catch.

Graden Holan led the Wildkats with 11 tackles, and Myers added nine.

KWL (2-3) will head to Gregory on Sept. 22, while Potter County (2-3) will travel to Leola/Frederick Area on Sept. 22.
