Prep football roundup for Oct. 13: Jaguars shut out Sully Buttes for home victory

Oct. 13—CORSICA, S.D. — Carter Wright was the difference for Corsica-Stickney in a low-scoring home nine-man football victory over Sully Buttes 14-0 on Friday night.

Wright rushed for 127 yards on 20 attempts, including a 45-yard second quarter touchdown run. The play came after the two sides traded blows for the better portion of the first half, then Wright broke through the right-hand side of the Chargers' defense and beat out the safety for the touchdown.

Tate Tolsma added 51 rushing yards on 15 carries, with a fourth quarter rushing touchdown to seal the victory. Gavin Barber led SB with 105 rushing yards.

Wright finished with a team-high 12 tackles for the Jaguars, while Caden Baumiller had 11 tackles and Tolsma had 10.

Corsica-Stickney (6-2) and Sully Buttes (3-5) will each be in action next week in the first round of the Class 9B playoffs.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS, S.D. — Rapid City Christian's Braylon Marshall scored a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to break a scoreless game and provide the decisive play to take down Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central in a battle of Class 11B foes on Friday night by a 7-0 margin.

Offense was hard to come by on Friday night, with soggy field conditions making moving the football difficult. The Comets had a pair of fourth quarter fourth-down stops late in the game to help pick up the victory.

RCC (6-2) and WWSSC (7-1) are set to participate in the Class 11B postseason on Oct. 19.

WINNER, S.D. — Winner finished off an undefeated regular season at home with a shutout win against Mount Vernon/Plankinton Friday night. The game ended in the third quarter due to the 50-point rule.

The Warriors began the scoring with tight end Shawn Hammerbeck returning a blocked punt 30 yards for the score early on in the first quarter. Gus Bartels also added a touchdown run in the first quarter of 27 yards. The second quarter saw the Warriors put up 28 points, highlighted by running back's Zac Olson's two rushing touchdowns. Ryken Orel scored the game-ending touchdown on a 1-yard run.

Winner (8-0) will host a playoff game in the Class 11B playoffs. MVP ends its regular season at 3-5.

KIMBALL, S.D. — Kimball/White Lake ended their regular season at home with a win on Senior Night Friday against Bennett County 50-6 in a Class 9AA matchup.

Running back Iden Myers rushed for two touchdowns on the night as part of a 263-yard performance on the ground. He scored on 7-yard and 42-yards runs. Tight ends Blake Leiferman and Lucas Lenz also had two-touchdown evenings for the WildKats. Lenz also led the Wildkats defense with seven tackles on the night.

For Bennett County, Tyce Gropper caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Shooter Frederick for the Warriors' lone points on the night.

Kimball/White Lake (4-5) will be in action next week in the first round of the Class 9AA playoffs. Bennett County's season ends with a record of 2-6.

TYNDALL, S.D. — Jackson Caba scored all three touchdowns to power Bon Homme to a home victory on Friday night over Gregory in nine-man football.

Caba provided the exclamation point late in the game, scoring on a 92-yard touchdown run. The game was 6-0 Cavaliers going to the fourth quarter before Caba had a 3-yard touchdown run to double the Bon Homme lead. He also had an 80-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for the Cavaliers, finishing with 284 yards on 24 carries and 11 tackles on defense. Landon Schmidt added an interception on defense for the Cavs.

Bon Homme (3-5) and Gregory (4-4) will both look forward to the Class 9AA and Class 9A playoffs, respectively.

PARKER, S.D. — A pair of Colin Robertson touchdowns lifted Parker to a Class 11B victory over McCook Central/Montrose on Friday.

Robertson was on the end of a 15-yard pass from Landon Wieman in the first quarter. Then, in the second quarter, he returned an interception 26 yards for the final points of the contest.

Parker (5-3) will play next week in the Class 11B first round, while MCM's season comes to an end at 1-7.

WAGNER, S.D. — Tri-Valley earned a road win on Friday night at Wagner, scoring 24 points in the first half to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Brody Dybvig had two rushing touchdowns for the Mustangs, while Landyn Reiser, Eli McFarland and Hayden Hastings also found the end zone on scoring runs for the Mustangs.

The Red Raiders got on the board with a 1-yard Gannon Knebel touchdown run on the game's final play to spoil the shutout.

Tri-Valley (5-3) and Wagner (6-2) will play in the Class 11B playoffs next week on Thursday, Oct. 19.

WOLSEY, S.D. — Aziah Meyer's three fourth-quarter touchdowns powered Avon to a fourth win over W-W on the road Friday night.

Trailing 6-0 in the fourth quarter, Meyer broke free on a 60-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-three. Moments later, he scored again on a 35-yard run, and the Pirates took a 14-6 lead. Meyer capped off the big finish with a 30-yard run, this time dodging two would-be tacklers to score the game-sealing touchdown.

Avon (6-2) and Wolsey-Wessington (4-4) will each be in action next week for the Class 9B playoffs.

ELK POINT, S.D. — Elk Point-Jefferson picked up a victory over Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan in both teams' final regular season matchup.

Running back Jacob Gale picked up two rushing touchdowns on the night for the Huskies, scoring from 27 yards and 54 yards out. Quarterback Keaton Gale threw for two touchdown passes of 55 yards each in the second quarter. Ashton Fairbanks and Garrett Merkley were on the scoring end of the passes from Gale. Merkley also collected a 44-yard touchdown run for the Huskies.

For BEE, quarterback Drake Gustafson scored on an 18-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to prevent a EPJ shutout, giving the Seahawks their only points of the night.

Both EPJ (7-1) and BEE (5-3) will be in action next week for the Class 11B playoffs.

HENRY, S.D. — Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy closed out its regular season with a road shutout victory over Florence/Henry.

Running back Dominic Sperling opened the scoring for the Phoenix with a 3-yard touchdown run, part of a two-touchdown night. Evan Scharberg caught two touchdown passes of 25 yards and 48 yards from quarterback Karter Weber, who combined with Easton Tschetter to throw five touchdown passes on the night.

FMFA (6-2) will be in action next week for the first round of the Class 9AA playoffs. F-H ends their season with a record of 0-8.

HOWARD, S.D. — Howard finished its regular season at home with a victory over Chester on Friday night.

Karsyn Feldhaus collected two rushing touchdowns on the night, opening the first quarter scoring with an 11-yard run. Taiden Hoyer picked up three rushing touchdowns, including an 83-yard run in the third quarter. Jackson Remmers and Kade Grocott also scored for the Tigers on the ground.

For Chester, Jovi Wolf caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Layke Wold in the first quarter to open the scoring. Wolf also collected a 65-yard touchdown run for the Flyers in the fourth quarter.

Howard (7-1) will be in action next week in the Class 9AA playoffs, while Chester Area (4-4) will look ahead to a first-round matchup in the Class 9A playoffs.

BURKE, S.D. — Gentry Bartling's three total touchdowns on the evening powered Burke to a victory over Gayville-Volin Friday night.

Bartling's touchdowns all came in the second quarter, scoring first on a 48-yard run. He added a 9-yard score later in the quarter on the ground. Then, with only 17 seconds remaining in the first half, Bartling returned an interception 65 yards for the touchdown, giving the Cougars an 18-0 halftime lead.

For Gayville-Volin, Will Fairley collected a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to get the Raiders into the scoring column on the night.

Burke and Gayville-Volin both finish the regular season with 2-6 records.
