Each week during the high school football season, Kitsap Sun sports reporter Jeff Graham and a guest will try to predict the winner of each West Sound game. Just for fun, we’ll throw in picks for the Seattle Seahawks, UW and WSU and well.

In Week 1, West Sound had one of the most successful opening-week showings in recent memory, going a combined 7-2. Graham went 6-5, sneaking over .500 with the Huskies and Cougars winning on the weekend. Guest picker and Kitsap Sun Editor David Nelson fared better, posting an 8-3 mark.

This week, the guest picker is Kitsap Sun reporter Nathan Pilling.

Thursday

South Kitsap (0-1) at Rogers (0-1), 7 p.m.: As the only West Sound team without a nonleague game on its schedule, South Kitsap nearly picked up an important South Puget Sound League 4A road win in Week 1, but fell 32-27 at Bethel. If the Wolves think they have a legitimate shot at challenging for a playoff spot this fall, they need to beat a Rogers team that just lost to Graham-Kapowsin 49-10. Last year, South Kitsap won this matchup 42-0. Jeff: South Kitsap. Nathan: South Kitsap.

Friday

North Mason (0-1) at Klahowya (1-0), 6:30 p.m.: North Mason was one of the two West Sound teams to lose in Week 1, falling 35-19 at home against Shelton. On the other hand, Klahowya pulled off road win against Coupeville on the final play of the game as quarterback Jack Kealoha found the end zone from a yard out. When these two teams last played in 2021, the Eagles prevailed 13-7. Jeff: Klahowya: Nathan: Klahowya.

Bremerton (1-0) at Shelton (1-0), 7 p.m.: With the hoopla of Joe Kennedy's return to coaching (and subsequent departure from coaching) in the rearview mirror, Bremerton faces its first road test of the season. The Knights were 27-12 winners at home against Mount Douglas in Week 1. Jeff: Bremerton. Nathan: Bremerton.

Kingston (1-0) at Rochester (0-1), 7 p.m.: Kingston wasted no time picking up win No. 1 under new head coach Ethan Goldizen, beating East Jefferson 28-8 in Week 1. Victory No. 2 might be trickier: Rochester won this Week 2 game a year ago over the Buccaneers in Kingston, 28-0. Jeff: Rochester. Nathan: Kingston.

Olympic (1-0) at Renton (1-0), 7 p.m.: Olympic's new-look attack under offensive coordinator Dan Ericson came out firing in Week 1 as the Trojans topped Eatonville 49-16. Up next is Olympic's first road game against a Renton team it defeated 28-7 in Week 2 last year. Jeff: Olympic: Nathan: Olympic.

Tumwater (1-0) at North Kitsap (1-0), 7 p.m.: After escaping Tacoma with a 24-21 win against Mount Tahoma in Week 1, North Kitsap plays its first home game against a Tumwater team that's been a traditional state power in 2A. Expect a higher-scoring game than last year's Week 2 matchup, won 8-6 by the Thunderbirds. Jeff: North Kitsap. Nathan: North Kitsap.

Auburn Mountainview (1-0) at Bainbridge (1-0), 7 p.m.: Bainbridge got off to a rocky start on the road against Hazen last week, falling behind 20-0 before rallying for a 47-20 win. The Spartans likely can't afford a similar rough beginning against an Auburn Mountainview team that blew out Kentridge 40-6 in Week 1. Jeff: Auburn Mountainview. Nathan: Bainbridge.

Saturday

Tulsa (1-0) at Washington (1-0), 2 p.m.: This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Jeff: UW. Nathan: UW.

Wisconsin (1-0) at Washington State (1-0), 4:30 p.m.: WSU upset the Badgers 17-14 last year in Madison. Can the Cougars do it again? Jeff: WSU. Nathan: Wisconsin.

Central Kitsap (1-0) at Bothell (1-0), 7 p.m.: Central Kitsap pulled off a 35-13 road win at Mariner in Week 1. The Cougars face a more formidable opponent in Bothell on the road in Week 2. Last year's game went in favor of Bothell, 40-7. Jeff: Bothell. Nathan: Bothell.

Sunday

L.A. Rams at Seahawks, 1:25 p.m.: Head coach Pete Carroll's shoes promise to be extra white for Seattle's season opener. Jeff: Seahawks. Nathan: Seahawks.

Cougars' Williams earns athlete of the week honor

Central Kitsap football player Jaden Williams earned the Kitsap Sun athlete of the week honor in an online poll that drew 74,993 votes.

Williams, who recorded seven tackles, one interception and returned two punts for touchdowns in Central Kitsap's Week 1 win over Mariner, picked up 31,115 votes. Other nominees were Olympic's Antonio Castorena (25,079 votes), Olympic's Devin Slater (10,400), Klahowya's Jack Kealoha (4,127), Bremerton's Oliver Christian (2,919), Bainbridge's Jack Grant (1,209) and Kingston's Camden Singer (144).

Look for a new poll on Monday at www.kitsapsun.com.
