It has been a rocky start for Jaguars defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. In 2015, he was taken by Jacksonville number three overall. The Jaguars definitely had a star player on their team. Back in his college days at Florida, Fowler improved his game each year. In three years, Fowler had 140 tackles, 14.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and five forced fumbles.

When you watch Fowler at Florida, he plays with anger and aggression. He plays to the whistle and he does what he can to create pressure on an offense. When the Jags drafted him, it was expected that he was going to be a star right from the beginning but suffering a torn ACL held him out of his rookie year.

After missing the 2015 season, fans were wondering what they were going to get out of Fowler heading in 2016. The good news is that he was able to play in all 16 games, but he did not produce the way the Jags wanted him to. I was expecting him to come back with determination and dominant but he didn’t.

2016 season

Fowler only had 32 tackles and four sacks last season. This wasn’t the start that fans wanted out of Fowler. He isn’t the biggest guy on the field, but he plays with a lot of aggression which could have helped him. One thing I like about him is that when he hits, he hits players into next week. He showed what he can do when he plays at 100 percent, but he needs to do it consistently.

How will he do in 2017?

Fowler should be able to do much better in 2017. I don’t see him putting up numbers like Khalil Mack or Von Miller but he could do much better than last season. If he keeps working at his game and strengthens his weaknesses we will see the Fowler that the Jags saw when they drafted him.

Season prediction: 63 tackles, 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
