Portsmouth, Rogers high school baseball teams on opposite ends of walk-off decisions

The Portsmouth High School baseball team literally walked off with a win when Charlie Cord drew a bases loaded free pass in the last inning as the Patriots rallied for a win over Central.

The Rogers High School baseball squad was on the other side of a walk-off on Wednesday when host North Smithfield scored a run its final at bat to edge the Vikings. Tiverton junior Zoe Peckham scored her 100th career goal in a lacrosse win over Scituate.

Coaches — or student-athletes or parents with permission from the coach — are reminded to email daily results – win or lose – to sports@newportri.com so their standout performers can be recognized as a Star of the Day and become eligible to be nominated for the Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week in an online poll.

The Patriots – with the help of Central pitchers – managed to eke out a 6-5 win after Charlie Cord coaxed a walk-off walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Mass also hurled the first five innings, allowed two earned runs, five hits, walked four and struck out 10 as the Patriots improved to 10-6 in Division-I.

Zoe Peckham and Elyse Meyers, Tiverton girls lacrosse

Peckham was an offensive machine and netted her 100th career goal as the Tigers defeated Scituate 17-14 in a Division-IV game at Roger Williams University on Wednesday.

Just a junior, Peckham scored six goals and assisted on eight others as the Tigers won their second game. Goalie Meyers made 14 saves, Maeve Banal had five goals, Catie Sullivan scored four goals and Julia Polofsky had two goals for the Tigers.

Conor Donahue and Nixon Brownell, Rogers baseball

Rogers rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score only to have host North Smithfield get the game-winner in the bottom of the frame as the once-beaten Northmen edged the Vikings 3-2 on Wednesday in a Division-III tussle.

Donahue pitched six innings and allowed an earned run, six hits and struck out four. Brownell socked a triple and single and Santiago Garduno had a hit, stole two bases and scored a run for the Vikings (11-4).

Fischer George and Nick Phelan, Middletown golf

Middletown had four of the top five golfers on the leaderboard as the Islanders downed Mount Hope 188-210 on Wednesday at Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club.

Islanders junior Fischer George led the way as he had two pars on the front nine and shot 43. Phelan opened and closed his round with pars and had two in between as he shot 47. Max Nasser (48) and Collin Klampert (50) rounded out the Islanders top four.

Joe Nardolillo and Tyler Both, Portsmouth golf

Nardolillo earned medalist honors but East Providence golfers filled five of the next six spots as the Townies topped the Patriots 187-191 on Wednesday at Green Valley Country Club. Portsmouth and East Providence each beat Bay View (219).

Nardolillo recorded five pars over the back nine and shot 43. Both shot 48 and Luke Harkins and Kyle Bielawa each shot 50 for Portsmouth. Harkins had the lone birdie of the day for Portsmouth as he carded a four on the par-5, 540-yard 17th hole.
