Portsmouth boys tennis hands defending state champs season's first loss

PORTSMOUTH – The Portsmouth High School boys tennis team won five matches in singles and beat Oyster River, the defending Division II state champions, 6-3 on Wednesday.

"Our players came out flat and Portsmouth had this one on the calendar for sure," Oyster River head coach Michael Pare said. "We haven't had a day where a bunch of players didn't play well at once; today that happened. We will keep working to get better. There were some good things that came out of this match and certainly a few things to focus on as the end of the season and playoffs approach."

Aidan Shilman (No. 1, 8-4), Raphael Hey Tenne (No. 3, 8-4), Ben Welsh (No. 4, 8-3), Jiles Tracz (No. 5, 8-5) and Josh White (No. 6, 8-3) all won their respective singles matches for the Clippers.

In doubles, Shilman and Hey Tenne won 8-1 at No. 1.

For Oyster River, Shashu Srivatsan won 8-5 at No. 2 singles, and Srivatsan and Simon Bliss won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and James Li and Alec Scarlett won 8-4 at No. 3.

BOYS TENNIS

DOVER - Diego Lopez (No. 1, 8-5), Judah Payeur (No. 2, 8-1), Nate Bigelow (No. 4, 8-2), Pat Carroll (No. 5, 8-4) and Luis Gonzalez (No. 6, 8-4) all won in singles for Dover (10-1) in this Division I match.

In doubles, Lopez and Payeur won 8-1 at No. 1, and Logan Spagna and Evan Weete won 8-3 at No. 3.

Spaulding 6

Salem 3

ROCHESTER - Cam Bastien (No. 2, 8-5), Jackson Emrich (No. 3, 8-5), George Mitropolous (No. 4, 8-3) and Ethan Hackett (No. 5, 8-0) all posted singles wins for Spaulding in this Division I match.

In doubles, Cam Brochu and Mitropolous won 8-4 at No. 1, and Hackett and Smith won 8-4 at No. 3.

DURHAM – The Bobcats won three matches in singles, and two in doubles, earning this Division II rivalry win.

Kathryn Demarest (No. 4, 8-1), Maggie Farwell (No. 5, 8-2) and Siena Schaier (No. 6, 8-3) all won in singles for Oyster River.

In doubles, Oyster River’s Clea Gibson and Sofia Karageorgos won 9-8 at No. 1, and Schaier and Kathryn Demarest won 8-1 at No. 3.

For Portsmouth, Sophia Jundi (No. 1, 8-4), Avery Porter (No. 2, 8-4) and Caylie Cook (No. 3, 8-6) won in singles, and Jundi and Cook won 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

HUDSON – The Green Wave posted their seventh shutout of the season and won their 27th consecutive match against Alvirne, which won last year’s Division II state title.

Taylor Wilson (No. 1, 8-1), Joci Faasen (No. 2, 8-3), Tory Vitko (No. 3, 8-1), Riya Ramdev (No. 4, 8-2), Mia Mozzoni (No. 5, 8-1) and Kate Ross (No. 6, 8-1) all won in singles.

In doubles, Wilson and Faasen won 8-2 at No. 1, Vitko and Ramdev won 8-4 at No. 2, and Ross and Ashlynn Swierk won 8-3 at No. 3.

KEENE - Polina Makarenko (No. 1, 8-1), Stella Sebeny (No. 2, 8-1), Amelia Dumont (No. 3, 8-4), Sydney Whalen (No. 5, 8-4) and Grace Vander Els (No. 6, 8-2) won in singles for Winnacunnet in this Division II match.

In doubles, Makarenko and Sebeny won 8-0 at No. 1, Mackenzie O’Regan and Whalen won 8-6 at No. 2, and Dumont and VanderEls won 8-1 at No. 3.

JAFFREY – Anna Seifert (No. 3, 8-3), Maggie Wade (No. 5, 8-2) and Morgan Hoyt (No. 6, 8-0) won their respective singles matches for STA (7-4) in this Division III match.

In doubles, Wade and Steinberg won 8-3 at No. 2.

BEDFORD - Ava Iaccobuci won 8-3 at No. 2 singles, and teamed with Katie Rocha to win 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, earning Exeter's two wins in this Division I match.

NORTH CONWAY – The Clippers jumped out to an 11-0 lead at halftime and cruised to this Division II win.

Briggs Catino led Portsmouth with four goals, while Ben Purcell had three goals and one assist.

James Buchan (two goals), Baden Paterson (goal, three assists), Riley Colins (goal, two assists), Charlie Horgan (goal, assist), Tristin Arp (goal, assist), Owen Wilson (goal), Zac Amend (two assists), Masi Shone (assist), Max Diep (assist) and Will Landry (assist) all figured in the scoring.

Portsmouth goalies Hobey Rolfe and Kai Paterson both had five saves.

Marshwood 14

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Tommy Demeroto’s five goals and five assists led Marshwood to this Class A win.

Kevin Cougler added three goals and one assist for the Hawks, while Declan Fitzgerald had two goals and two assists, and Quinn Maguire had two goals.

Teammates Milo Closson and Ty Cougler both had one goal. Marshwood goalie Luke Dockham starred.

WELLS, Maine - Tucker Johnson had three goals and one assist for Traip in this Class C loss.

Eli Holben and Joey Watts both had two goals for the Rangers, while Aram Brewer had one.

DOVER - Rylen Gray, Julia Rowley, Payton Denning and Zayda Clairmont all had three goals for Dover in this Division I win.

Lily Hunt and Megan Healy both had two goals for the Green Wave, and Hannah Deroy had one.

Denning added three assists in the win, while Gray, Clairmont, Reese Sanders, Molly Goodridge, Megan Healy, Danielle Young and Elsie Gregorakos all had one.

YORK, Maine – Grace Clayton had three goals and Sophia Luchette had two for York in this Class B loss. York goalie Tia Spenlinhauer had eight saves.

DOVER - Megan Leahy scored five goals, and Lizzy Holden had three for St. Thomas Aquinas in this Division III win.

Reece Anderson and Charlotte De Tolla both added one goal for the Saints, while Cat Vetter and Kensley Harris each had one.

STA goalie Anna Stailey had seven saves. Defensively, Grace Talbot and Ava Lyder starred.

PORTSMOUTH - Annie Parker had six goals and one assist, and Avery Ruhnke had five goals and two assists for Division I Portsmouth in this win over Division III Bow.

Morgan Ruhnke added four goals for the Clippers, while Ginger Vinciguerra had two goals an Addie Delisle had one goal and one assist. Portsmouth goalie Sage Bussiere had 11 saves.

BASEBALL

Exeter 6

Windham 1

EXETER – Sophomore Hayden Schimoler had two hits and two RBIs, and Cam Snee had two RBIs as Exeter improved to 11-2 with this Division I win.

Exeter senior George Young scattered nine hits over seven innings, striking out four and getting the win.

Michael Caron had two hits for the Exeter, and Finn Adams had one.

DURHAM – The Saints scored one run in the seventh inning, improving to 9-1 with this Division II win.

Timmy Avery, Thaao Papakonstantis and Cade Murphy all had two RBIs for St. Thomas Aquinas. Thaao Papakonstantis had a team-high three hits, while Devon Paquette, Timmy Avery, and Charlie Covert all had two.

Oyster River tied the game in the sixth on RBI singles by Finn Meehan and Jackson Follis. Teammates Cam Sengenberger (two hits, RBI, run), Colin Klein (two hits, two RBIs, run), Lucas Savage (two hits, RBI, run) led the Bobcats.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine – Zay Foye allowed three hits and one earned run, taking this Class C South loss for the Rangers.

Brady Parsons had two hits for Traip, while Zach Stacy, Quinn Alessi and Foye all had one.

Bennett allowed five hits and two earned runs over seven innings, striking out eight.

YORK, Maine - Ella Moon’s grand slam keyed a nine-run fourth inning for York in this six-inning, Class B South game.

Junior McKayla Kortes blasted a three-run homer in the fifth for the Wildcats, Senior Maddy Raymond pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts, earning the win.

Emily Estes, Carlie Welch and Maddie Fitzgerald all had two hits for York (7-1), and Ella Hickey, Ava Brent and Maddy Raymond all had one.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine - Emme Hale and Morgan Wilcox both had four hits and scored four runs for Traip in this Class C South loss.

NEWMARKET – Sophomore Kierra Souphakhot struck out 16 and allowed just two hits in this Division IV win which saw Souphakhot pick up her 250th career strikeout.

Souphakhot also had four hits and three RBIs, while Gia Tilton drove in three and scored two, and Isabella Mendez had three hits and scored twice.Teammate Mariza Zigouri had one hit and scored four runs.

PORTSMOUTH – The Clippers, trailing 5-3, scored seven runs in the fifth, and reached the .500 mark with this Division I win.

Abby Nersesian led Portsmouth (5-5) with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Teammates Addy Carrol (three hits, RBI, two runs), Jordan Ovadek (two hits, two RBIs, run), Evy Douglass (two hits, two RBIs), and Brigid Cadle (hit, two runs, RBI) starred.

Sydney Pettis struck out five over seven innings, earning the win.

DOVER – The Saints improved to 12-0 with this Division III win that ended after five innings.

Sophomore Abbie Gaynor struck out 13 and allowed one hit over five innings, earning the win.

Amelia Anderson (two hits, two runs), Maddie Hoyt (hit, RBI, run), Sarah Flynn (hit, RBI, run), Elizabeth Flynn (hit, RBI, run) and Ashleigh von der Linden (four walks, two runs) led the STA offense.

HAMPTON – James Baker’s 14 kills, seven digs and two blocks led Winnacunnet (5-3) to this Division I win.

Individual set scores were 25-15, 25-21, 25-19.

Joshua Schaake (28 digs, nine kills), Mike Smith (17 service points), Willem Belanger (14 digs) and Bryce Molnar (23 assists) led the Warriors.
