Portage HS scores | Feb. 2: Mogadore hoops wins 12th in row, Carnahan scores 28 for Aurora
Mogadore won its 12th straight game, surging ahead in the second quarter Friday for a 77-62 victory over Southeast in Portage Trail Conference boys basketball.
Layne Miller was spectacular for the Wildcats (13-3, 6-1) with 38 points, including five 3-pointers, to hit the 1,000-point mark. Fellow Mogadore senior Corey Lehner added 18 points, making two from deep. Down one at the end of a quarter, the Wildcats, who remain tied atop the PTC with Warren JFK, took the lead by controlling the second (23-12), then sealed the outcome with a strong fourth (23-16).
Senior Garrett Sprutte led the Pirates (7-9, 1-6) with 32 points while freshman Cohen Richardson added 18.
Aurora 73, Highland 59
The Greenmen won for the ninth time in their last 11 games behind Cooper Carnahan's 28 points and 12 rebounds and Zach Pannetti's 13 points. Joshua Harrell also finished in double figures for Aurora (11-6, 6-5 Suburban American).
Streetsboro 42, Woodridge 39
After the Bulldogs doubled up on them in the opening quarter (10-5), the Rockets responded with a 16-6 second quarter.
Charles Ivory and Jack Batten led Streetsboro (9-8, 7-4 Metro Athletic Conference) with nine points apiece, with the latter making three 3-pointers.
Evan Duve and Gavin Lynch led Woodridge (7-12, 5-7) with 11 points apiece.
Coventry 71, Field 59
The Falcons fell despite a solid fourth-quarter rally.
The Comets took control early with an 18-7 first quarter. Reggie Edwards (23 points, 14 rebounds), Jaden Keenan (19) and Alex Meinen (15) led the way for Coventry (11-6, 8-3 MAC).
Manny Smith (13 points), Trevor Dixon (12) and Grady Eader (10) also finished in double figures for Field (3-14, 2-9).
Lake Center 75, Rootstown 45
Matthew Warder led the Tigers (12-5, 4-3 PTC) with 24 points while Tanner Norman added 14, including four 3-pointers. LCC took control early with a 25-8 first quarter.
Blake Mullaly drained three 3-pointers to lead Rootstown (3-13, 0-7) with 12 points.
Newton Falls 60, Garfield 38
The G-Men (4-12, 3-8 Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Grey Tier) lost despite 12 second-half points from Preston Gedeon, who led all players with 16 overall.
Alex Stinson (14 points), Cameron Huff (11) and Carson Howard (11) paced the Tigers.
