Portage high school scores | Dec. 16: Local wrestlers shine at Solon Comet Classic

Aurora wrestling edged Walsh Jesuit by half a point to earn runner-up honors at the Solon Comet Classic.

The Greenmen's big day included gold medals for Johnny Green (113) and Drake Blasiel (150), silver medals for Cole Walton (165) and Austin Grossman (190) and a bronze medal for Luke Green (106).

Johnny Green's title match was a thriller as Green, ranked third in the state in his weight class by BoroFan, edged fourth-ranked Austin Bickerton of Highland, 6-3. Brasiel's title match also came against the Hornets as he topped Niko Giatis in sudden victory.

2023 state champion Keegan Sell, a Garfield senior, captured a Solon Comet Classic championship as well at 215 pounds. He won his title match against Lake Catholic freshman Danny Zmorowski, ranked fourth in the state by BoroFan, with a pin late in the second period.

Seniors Drake Rennecker (3rd, 150) and JP Wrobel (4th, 126) led Crestwood Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Field 45, Mogadore 40

The Falcons edged the Wildcats in Saturday's rivalry game, behind 15 points from Delilah Rahe and 13 points from McKayla Miller. Rahe, a Field junior, made it a double-double with 14 rebounds while Miller drained a pair of 3-pointers.

Ari Tompkins and Amelia Morris joined Rahe in posting double-doubles as both had 10 rebounds, with Tompkins leading Mogadore with 14 points while Morris added 11.

Western Reserve 45, Southeast 37

The Blue Devils handed the Pirates their first loss, buoyed by a 17-5 fourth quarter.

Bailey Morris and Emmi Smallfield scored 12 points apiece to lead Southeast, which held a 22-15 advantage at the half.

Kylee Ramsey scored 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead Western Reserve.

Boys Basketball

Crestwood 68, Grand Valley 59

The undefeated Red Devils picked up a key Chagrin Valley Conference win despite 36 points from the Mustangs' Jerry Schultz. Crestwood won with balance, including five players in double figures. Charlie Schweickert led the way for the Red Devils with 15 points, hitting 3 of 6 from deep.
