Portage high school scores | Dec. 29: Rennecker, Wrobel win Kenston Invitational titles

The Crestwood wrestling team picked up two titles Friday at the Kenston Invitational.

Red Devils senior J.P. Wrobel captured gold at 132 pounds, prevailing in two tight decisions. After surging to the semifinals with a two first-period pins, Wrobel edged Madison senior Jack Harrison 6-4 to get to the championship. Wrobel won that title match 6-2 over Revere junior Sal Bonacuse.

Fellow Crestwood senior Drake Rennecker also had to pass a significant semifinal test to capture his championship at 150 pounds. After shutting out West Geauga freshman Austin Wheatley 6-0 in the quarterfinals, Rennecker edged Revere junior Aidan Jones 4-2 in overtime in the semis. He then pinned Crestview senior Jaden Hedrick in the second period of their championship match.

All told, the Red Devils finished 14th of 30 teams with 91.5 points, as Gavin McIntyre (215) added a third-place finish.

John Riley (175) led Field with his sixth-place finish as the Falcons placed 23rd in the team standings with 43 points.

Medina Invitational

Rootstown finished 20th at the prestigious Medina Invitational, competing mostly against Division I and II teams.

The Rovers had three placers, led by junior Tristan McKibben earning runner-up honors at 157 pounds. McKibben's victories included a pin of Pickerington North's Drennen Landenberger, a ranked Division I wrestler, in the semifinals.

Junior Brian Youngblood's fourth-place finish at 175 pounds included three straight wins in the consolation bracket, the final one coming over ranked Westfall wrestler Bryce Wickline. Entering the match, BoroFan had Wickline ranked 13th and Youngblood at 16th in Division III. Youngblood won with a pin midway through the third period.

Junior Dominic Duvall added a seventh-place finish at 150 pounds, bouncing back from a second-round defeat to win five straight consolation matches.
