Portage high school scores | Aug. 31: Rootstown girls soccer edges Warren JFK in key win

Rootstown remained atop the Portage Trail Conference girls soccer standings with a key 3-2 win over Warren JFK Thursday.

Facing an Eagles team fresh off an impressive win over Southeast, the Rovers got the game-winning goal from Sophia Opritza. Taylor Monegan and Melanie Plecko also found the back of the net and Natalie Opritza finished with six saves for Rootstown.

Southeast 4, Aquinas 0

The Pirates bounced back from a Monday loss to the Eagles with a decisive win over the Knights.

Sarah Craver had two goals to lead Southeast while Elliott Smallfield had a goal and an assist and Claire Dillner scored on a penalty kick.

Boys Soccer

Southeast 4, Aquinas 0

The Pirates picked up their first league win behind Gavin Bertka's two goals and one assist.

Owen Bowers and Blake Dillner also scored for Southeast and Danny Allen and Matt Fields added assists.

Warren JFK 6, Rootstown 5

The Rovers kept battling against the defending PTC champion Eagles after falling behind 4-1 at the half.

Rootstown's hard work paid off with Nathan Pastor (2 goals, 2 assists) scoring his 100th career point. Freshman Zach Pastor also had two goals and Brady Fillmore had two assists for the Rovers.

Meanwhile, Trent Gauer made seven saves for Rootstown.

Volleyball

Crestwood def. Grand Valley, 25-8, 25-15, 25-12

The Red Devils (4-1) won their third straight match as Maddie Dustman led the team in points (10) and kills (8) and Audrey Fusci notched an impressive five aces. Roxxy Bretz tacked on seven kills for Crestwood.

Rootstown def. Lake Center, 25-23, 26-24, 25-22

The Rovers topped last year's Portage Trail Conference champions in exciting fashion, edging the Tigers in all three sets.

Nadia Lough was a force all over for Rootstown with eight kills, seven digs and four blocks.

Allison Strickland added 16 assists and seven aces, while Shelbie Krieger dominated at the net with nine blocks.

Boys Golf

Brookfield 185, Garfield 190

The G-Men gave the undefeated Warriors a battle in Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference action.

Garfield senior Landen Gedeon turned in the top score among all golfers with a 43, while sophomore Hunter Anderson (47) and senior Tyler Baczkowski (48) also carded sub-50 scores.

Freshman Cody Davidson (44), sophomore Braydon DeMaria (45) and junior Hunter Warrender (46) all finished with similarly strong scores for Brookfield.

Girls Golf

Streetsboro 204, Springfield 237

The Rockets surged to 5-2 in Metro Athletic Conference play with a decisive win over the Spartans at Chenoweth Golf Course.

Streetsboro senior Cortney Evert (45), sophomore Sarah Czirok (48) and senior Samantha Clark (50) led all golfers from both teams.
