POLL: St. Cloud-area wrestling and swimming champions up for athlete of the week

SAINT CLOUD — In the last week of February, St. Cloud-are athletes won state championships, set new program records and shined in postseason contests.

Vote until the end of March 9 for who you think should be athlete of the week for the week of February 25-March 2.

Kenning pins opponent in 28 seconds: Three St. Cloud siblings podium at state wrestling tournament; Becker team takes third

St. Cloud Tech/St. Cloud Cathedral/ROCORI/Becker swim team sophomore Micah Davis won two individual state championships in the Class 2A 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly for the second year in a row in both races. In the butterfly, Davis set a new program and state meet record with a time of 46.94, automatically qualifying for all-American status. 

St. Cloud Tech (19-9) boys basketball senior Tameron Ferguson banged home 41 points in a win Feb. 26 over Fergus Falls (13-13) and in a loss March 1 against Brainerd (17-9). He also had eight rebounds, three assists and ten steals in the two regular-season games.

The St. Cloud Cathedral (25-4-1) boys hockey team is playing for the Class 1A state championship Saturday, but last week the team beat Monticello (21-6-1) in the Section 4-1A championship. In the 4-1 game Feb. 28 Crusader junior John Hirschfeld had two assists on the opening and closing goals. 

St. Cloud Crush senior wrestler Camryn Kenning won her second-straight individual wrestling title, capping an 8-0 undefeated season in Class 3A at 235 pounds. Kenning pinned her champion opponent in 28 seconds.

Becker wrestling junior Kaden Nicolas (50-4) won the Class 2A 139-pound championship, upsetting the No. 1 seed, Jack Nelson (51-3), in the title match. Nelson beat Nicolas in the same fight last year, but the referee scored this years’ rematch 5-4 in favor fo the Bulldog. Nicolas and Becker also took third place in the Class 2A team meet.

Becker (19-9) girls basketball senior Alexis Rose scored 55 points in the postseason for Becker, which came to a close March 2 in the Section 4-3A semifinal against Totino Grace (17-11). The Bulldogs beat up on St. Francis (11-17) in the opening quarterfinal 72-38. In addition to her scoring, Rose had 17 assists, six rebounds, and four steals in the two games to end the season.

In Cathedral hockey’s 4-1 win over Monticello, sophomore Griffin Sturm scored a goal and assisted another to widen the Crusaders’ lead in the section championship.
