Playoff Roundup: Central Christian, Smithville set for district final showdown

Smithville and Central Christian have trusted their defense to get the job done all year, and they're both playing in a district final because of it.

Behind a huge performance from goalie Luke DeRodes, No. 8 Smithville knocked off top-seeded Open Door Christian 1-0 while No. 6 Central Christian pitched a 2-0 shutout against No. 4 Lake Ridge Academy to advance to Saturday's district title game.

The championship matchup is set for 11 a.m. at North Ridgeville High School.

DeRodes and Smithville put together a marvelous defensive display to pull off the upset, with the goalie coming up with 14 saves. Aaron Meech's goal from Quinn Maibach was all the Smithies needed to make sure the defensive performance held up.

Meanwhile, Central Christian put on a similarly impressive display, keeping a third straight opponent scoreless. Central has outscored tournament foes by a combined score of 18-0.
