Playoff preview: Breaking down the postseason for Palm Beach County boys basketball teams

It's the week we've been waiting for all winter. District tournaments are back for Palm Beach County's high school basketball teams!

Boys high school basketball teams around the state will tip off on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and go on to battle for the championship on Saturday, Feb. 10. Then, winners will officially be on the winding road to FHSAA state championships in Lakeland.

Here's a district-by-district breakdown of Palm Beach County's best boys basketball programs, and the Post's picks for champions and underdogs. Local teams are indicated in bold. Find the girls' schedule by clicking here.

Which boys teams will bring home hardware?

District 8-1A

Host: Higher-seed

When? Feb. 6 semifinals: No. 2 Vanguard vs. No. 3 Glades Day, Feb. 10 finals: No. 1 Pahokee vs. Vanguard/GD

Favorite: Pahokee

What to know: Blue Devils finished regular season with 17 losses ... both wins in 2023-24 came against Glades Day (1-16)... entering postseason No. 606 in Florida, No. 38 in 1R, and No. 7 in Region 4. Pahokee led by sophomore small forward an point guard Javian Jones, averaging 13.1 points per game. Vanguard is 2-9 against -4.99-rated schedule to 0.42 for Pahokee.

Underdog: Vanguard

District 14-2A

Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 5 Trinity Christian Academy vs. No. 4 Pine School, 4 p.m., No. 7 Berean Christian vs. No. 2 Atlantic Christian, No. 6 Jupiter Christian vs. No. 3 Lake Worth Christian, Boca Raton Christian/Village Academy vs. No. 1 Grandview Prep, Feb. 8 semifinals: GVP/BRC/VA vs. TCA/TPS, BC/AC vs. JCS/LWC

Favorite: Grandview Prep

What to know: Juniors Xavian Charles, Aeris Lawson, and senior Marco Jordanne averaging, 17.5, 16.1, and 14.4 points per game, respectively, to send Grandview Prep into districts with 17-3 record ... enter postseason No. 168 in Florida, No. 9 in 2A, No. 3 in Region 4. Defenders, led by 21-plus point scorers Landen Harwood and Chase Troncale, both juniors, have yet to defeat GVP (lost 88-68, 73-52 in regular season) and fell by three points to Atlantic Christian in December, but playoff experience could help surprise come finals.

Underdog: Lake Worth Christian

District 15-2A

Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 5 BridgePrep Village Green vs. No. 4 Donna Klein Jewish Academy, No. 7 Cushman vs. No. 2 Dade Christian, 6 p.m., No. 6 Highlands Christian vs. No. 3 Sheridan Hills (to be played at Sagemont), 4:30 p.m., Feb. 8 semifinals: No. 1 Sagemont vs. DKJA/BPVG, Cushman/DC vs. HC/SH

Favorite: Sagemont

What to know: Reigning 2A state champion Sagemont finished regular season 17-6 ... entered postseason No. 7 in Florida, No. 2 in 2A, No. 1 in Region 4. 6-foot-6 guard and forward Patrick Liburd averaging 16.3 points per game for Sagemont, which holds hardest schedule strength (16.54) to average -4.91-rating among 32 remaining teams in 2A.

Underdog: Dade Christian

District 8-3A

When? Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 5 John Carroll Catholic vs. No. 4 Inlet Grove, 6 pm., No. 7 Oxbridge vs. No. 2 King's Academy, No. 6 Somerset College Prep vs. No. 3 Benjamin, Feb. 8 semifinals: No. 1 Cardinal Newman vs. JCC/IG, OA/TKA vs. SCP/Ben

Favorite: Cardinal Newman

What to know: Top-scoring senior Crusader Jermaine Council preparing for visit from former teammates at King's (19-6), which he brought a district championship last winter. Newman enters postseason No. 146 overall, No. 28 in 3A, and No. 6 in Region 2 ... Lions enter No. 201 in Florida, No. 34 in 3A, and No. 8 in Region 2, led by junior point guard Javian Jones, averaging 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. Rivals did not face off during regular season.

Underdog: King's

District 13-3A

Favorite: St. Andrew's

What to know: St. Andrew's (17-6) in driver's seat to defend district championship, still hosting senior point guard Brooklyn Vick on the roster ... enter postseason No. 81 in Florida, No. 14 in 3A, and No. 5 in Region 4. Saint John Paul II could be dark horse, touting slightly tougher rout of opponents than Scots and having found identity without now-graduated team staple Kyle Edison since 62-45 loss to St. Andrew's at top of season. Coached by FAU men's basketball alum Seydou Kone, SJPII (12-10) came six points shy of forcing overtime at Newman, which came back late to defeat Scots, 66-61, in last week of regular season.

District 13-4A

Host: North Broward Prep

When? Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 8 Coral Springs Charter vs. No. 1 Calvary Christian Academy, No. 5 Pompano Beach vs. No. 4 Glades Central, No. 7 Dreyfoos vs No. 2 North Broward Prep, 4:30 p.m., No. 6 Somerset Academy-Canyons vs. No. 3 American Heritage-Delray, 6 p.m., Feb. 8 semifinals: CSC/CCA vs. PB/GC, Dreyfoos/NBP vs. SAC/AHD

Favorite: Calvary Christian

What to know: Battle-tested Calvary Christian squad led by Palm Beach County natives Stone Bureau, Cayden Daughtry, and Collin Paul set to reestablish itself as district champs after going freelance in 2023 ... enter postseason No. 13 in Florida, No. 4 in Class 4A, and No. 2 in Region 4. Eagles (14-8) didn't face any district opponent during regular season .... focused on facing powerhouses like Lake Worth, which fell 83-58 to three-time state champions. North Broward Prep (19-6) most likely to meet CCA in finals, but Heritage-Delray could pull off an upset with proper adjustments after 37-30 defeat from NBP in January.

Underdog: American Heritage-Delray

District 14-5A

What to know: Chargers don't have the man-power they did in 2023 without Bureau and now-alum Nate Sasser, but return three-star senior prospect Ian Smikle, billed at 6-foot-9. With Tulsa commit still on the floor, plus home advantage, Suncoast (12-11) may surprise to repeat as district champions ... enter postseason No. 155 in Florida, No. 26 in 5A, No. 11 in Region 4. Stranahan crew is young, led by sophomore David Nealy (12.3 ppg) and Christian Yeargin (13.4 ppg) to 15-3 regular season finish ... enter postseason No. 31 in Florida, No. 2 in 5A, No. 4 in Region 4.

District 13-6A

When? Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 5 Seminole Ridge vs. No. 4 West Boca Raton, 6 p.m., No. 6 Coconut Creek vs. No. 3 Atlantic, 6 p.m., Feb. 8 semifinals: No. 2 Blanche Ely vs. CC/ATL, 6 p.m., No. 1 Dwyer vs. Ridge/WBR, 7:30 p.m.

Favorite: Dwyer

What to know: Despite losing senior top scorer Jaelen Nelson in first half, reigning 6A state champ Dwyer rounded out regular season 19-3 with win over Lake Worth, signaling success to come in district tournaments ... enter postseason No. 24 in Florida, No. 4 in 6A, No. 3 in Region 4. Blanche Ely (14-9) will be tough, having faced Lake Worth, Sagemont, NBP and more, but likely no match for team of Panthers fueled by recent upset losses from Lakes and Jupiter. Atlantic program coached by playoff veteran Tony Watson could ride out momentum of four-game win-streak to reach finals ... enter postseason No. 255 in Florida, No. 34 in 6A, No. 15 in Region 4.

Underdog: Atlantic

District 7-7A

When? Feb. 6 quarterfinals: No. 5 Fort Pierce-Central vs. No. 4 Centennial, No. 7 Vero Beach vs. No. 2 Jupiter, No. 6 Palm Beach Gardens vs. No. 3 Treasure Coast, Feb. 8 semifinals: No. 1 Palm Beach Lakes, vs. Cent./FPC, Jup/VB vs. TC/PBG

Favorite: Jupiter

What to know: Offseason efforts of Jupiter seniors Talan Caudell, Kenny Greenling, and Max Kocha, and junior Ray Ray Collum propelled Warriors to 21-2 regular season ... entering postseason No. 41 overall, No. 12 in 7A, No. 7 in Region 2. Lakes enters postseason No. 40 overall, No. 11 in 7A, No. 6 in Region 2, but Warriors have already proven they can beat the Rams (14-5) on the road with 39-32 victory in January.

What to know: Headed for rematch of 2023 district championship between Lake Worth and Wellington, when Trojans (15-9) walked away with title after 73-71 victory. Wolverines (20-4) defeated Lake Worth, 59-54, on Jan. 26 ... enter postseason No. 42 in Florida, No. 13 in 7A, No. 7 in Region 2. Palm Beach Central (19-6) has chops to pull off semifinal upset of Wellington, proven by 53-52 holiday tournament victory, but lost to LW, 59-34, in early season. LW enters playoffs No. 29 in Florida, No. 9 in 7A, No. 4 in Region 2.

Underdog: Wellington

District 13-7A

What to know: Olympic Heights in line for what appears to be program's first-ever district championship. Lions have little varsity experience from team's seniors to underclassmen, but finished regular season 13-11 ... enter postseason ranked No. 293 overall, No. 60 in 7A, No. 15 in Region 4. Stronger schedule could leave Park Vista (7-14) more prepared for playoff scenarios ... lost to OH, 60-57, on Jan. 25. Stoneman Douglas (11-13) could swoop in from three-seed ... defeated OH, 60-54, in third game of season.

Underdog: Park Vista
