Pistons’ Monty Williams believes starting games will help Ausar Thompson
Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams previously hinted that Ausar Thompson could see a large role to start the season, and the fifth pick has impressed in the early going.
In his latest effort, Thompson recorded nine points, 12 rebounds, one steal and one block on Saturday in a 118-102 win at home over the Chicago Bulls. He hauled in three offensive rebounds and finished by shooting 3-of-7 from the field in 31 minutes.
Thompson has emerged as one of the top perimeter defenders with the Pistons and is often matched up with the best player on opposing teams. Williams believes those assignments, in addition to starting games, will help him, via Mike Curtis of the Detroit News.

Thompson has started each of the first three games of the season for the Pistons, averaging 6.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.3 blocks. He made history on Wednesday after swatting five shots, the most by a Piston in a debut game; it was tied for the third-most ever.
The 20-year-old has dazzled on the defensive end of the floor and should continue to find success there throughout the year. He’ll need more time to find his way on offense, but that should come with more time and reps in games.
Thompson brings versatility to the court and can play on or off the ball. With that ability, and what he brings defensively, Thompson should be in store for a strong rookie campaign.
