Pickleball 901 Holdings to hold summer pop-up events across the area

Pickleball 901 Holdings is bringing back its summer events series to showcase the game across Memphis during the summer months.

The local pickleball group’s 2024 summer event pickleball event series presented by Orion Federal Credit Union will kick off Saturday, May 11, following the Orion 5K run in the Edge District. The Pickleball 901 summer series will feature seven “pop-up” events across the city on select weekends from May 11 to Aug. 24.

Pickleball 901 is looking to build off last year’s inaugural event series.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring the Pickleball 901 summer series back to Memphis,” said Jakob Eliason, co-founder of Pickleball 901. “Last year was just the beginning, and this year, alongside Orion, we’re gearing up for an unforgettable summer."

Most events will span the whole weekend with Saturdays featuring free pickleball for the public, followed by a Sunday tournament with a cash prize. There will a small fee for tournament play. The events will consist of four pickleball courts as well as music, food, drinks, vendors and other activities on site.

Using the summer event series as a barometer for proposed pop-up club

Pickleball 901 is looking to open eight temporary indoor pickleball courts inside the roughly 30,000-square-foot former Bed Bath & Beyond space at Collierville’s Carriage Crossing Mall. The concept would be called the “Pickleball Pop-Up Club,” according to Adam Clay, majority owner of Pickleball 901 Holdings. The proposed project took a step closer to becoming a reality when the Collierville Planning Commission during its recent meeting unanimously recommended approval of a conditional use permit to allow pickleball courts at Carriage Crossing Mall. The item will now go in front of the Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen on May 28 for approval.

If things work out, Eliason said the plan would be for the final summer series weekend event on Aug. 24 and 25 to be held at Carriage Crossing.

“Assuming we are open, we will conclude the whole series at our Pop-Up Club in Collierville,” he said. “We’re hoping to have a big final tournament there.”
