Rory McIlroy moving up

Rory McIlroy is 2-under for the day and 5-under for the tournament after making birdie on hole No. 4. That followed the par-5 3rd hole where McIlroy took a free drop after a wayward drive and had to play for a long third shot anyway with a short play out of the trees.

On the par-3 No. 4, Scottie Scheffler's tee shot landed four inches from the hole for the best shot at the hole this week. He tapped in for birdie and moved up to 4-under.

The lead is still at 7-under, shared by Lucas Glover, J.T. Poston and Tommy Fleetwood as of 1 p.m. CT.

Jordan Spieth drops down leaderboard while Tommy Fleetwood surges

Jordan Spieth bogeyed hole Nos. 12 and 14 to drop down to 5-under and two shots off the lead.

That lead is currently shared by Lucas Glover, J.T. Poston and Tommy Fleetwood at 7-under. Fleetwood has birdied three holes in a row (holes 2-4) and is 3-under for the day through four holes.

Eric Cole quick start moves him into second

Rookie Eric Cole birdied the first two holes (starting on the back nine) to move to 6-under, one shot behind Jordan Spieth.

Cole, 35, is one of the best stories of the season. He won 12 times on the Minor League Golf Tour over the last 14 years while trying to push into the PGA Tour ranks. Cole got his Korn Ferry Tour card in 2021 and finished third in the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Championship, securing his PGA Tour card for 2022-23.

Cole missed the first four cuts during the fall portion of the schedule, but eventually recorded three top-10 finishes including a runner-up finish at The Honda Classic after losing in a playoff to Chris Kirk. The Palm Springs, California native made eight straight cuts this summer to secure his spot in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He knows now that his 2023-24 card is secure, but a good finish this weekend could go a long way in helping him earn a spot in the Tour Championship, which will earn him a 2024 Masters invitation.

Jordan Spieth scores low on Thursday, but can he do it the rest of the weekend?

Jordan Spieth's 7 under gave him the lead, and it comes after he took two weeks off following a T23 finish at The Open Championship last month.

Although he has not won this year, he has posted some good finishes, including runner-up at the RBC Heritage and a T4 finish at The Masters.

Spieth will tee off Friday at 10:51 a.m. with Sungjae Im and Justin Rose.

Collin Morikawa pledging money to support relief efforts in Maui

Collin Morikawa, who has grandparents from Hawaii, pledged to donate $1,000 per birdie at all three tournaments of the FedEx Cup Playoffs to relief efforts in Maui following this week's deadly wildfires.

Morikawa announced the pledge on Instagram. The money will go to two charities — Maui United Way and World Central Kitchen.

Local officials reported Thursday that at least 53 people have died as a result of the wildfires in Lahaina that have devastated the community.
