PFF: Bills QB Josh Allen thrived against pressure in 2021
Buffalo Bills quarterback is clutch and can play under the pressure. He’s proven that.
But in a very serious and literal sense as well, according to Pro Football Focus.
The football analytics outlet rated every starting QB in the NFL, head-to-head, in terms of their play against pressure from opposing defenses. Allen is amongst the NFL’s best at it.
Per PFF’s figures, Allen thrived when facing pressure, often exploiting it. Overall, Allen ranked as the third-best quarterback while throwing the ball under pressure in the NFL.
Here’s how PFF explained Allen’s play against pressure:
Under pressure, the Bills’ signal-caller looked calm and collected. He completed 88 of his 194 pressured attempts for a fourth-ranked 1,150 yards, a leading 13 touchdowns, a tied-for-first 66 first downs and 19 big-time throws, which also led the group. In total, Allen ranked top five in seven different categories.
Allen’s ability to play well under pressure makes sense. There’s no reason to overthink it.
He’s a big-armed quarterback that’s as mobile as any other player on the field. Because of his dual-threat ability, things open up for Allen–And to his credit, he has often delivered.
Aside from Allen, the only two quarterbacks that graded better against pressure was the former Indianapolis Colts and now Washington Commanders’ Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, respectively.
