Pensacola Catholic's Carter McCulley drafted at the buzzer by the Los Angeles Dodgers

As the 2022 MLB Draft began to wind down, one last Pensacola-area player found himself getting the surprise of a lifetime.

With the 615th pick in the 20th round of the draft, Pensacola Catholic's Carter McCulley was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers. There were 616 total picks in this year's event.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound utility player had his fingerprints all over the Crusaders' 16-10 record this season, delivering on the mound, at shortstop and in the batter's box.

On the bump he was 3-2 over eight appearances and 25 1/3 innings of work. He struck out 25 batters in those showings. At his projected professional position, shortstop, McCulley had 41 assists and 14 putouts, turning five double plays as well.

Offensively, the Dodgers' draft selection batted .310 with 27 RBIs, a team-leading eight doubles and five home runs.

According to Perfect Game, the switch-hitter was ranked 510th in the country amongst shortstops and 77th in the state of Florida.

As a late-round selection, McCulley may still opt to go to local Pensacola State College and work on raising his future draft value. This past spring, PSC was just 16-30, but sent four players off to DII schools and three more to the DI ranks.

McCulley now becomes the 21st player drafted in the history of  the PCHS baseball program.
