Penn State set to make major investment in Micah Shrewsberry, per report
With questions circling about the future of Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry, the Nittany Lions brass appear poised to do something it has rarely done in the program’s history. It’s prepared to break the bank for a men’s basketball coach.
According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, via Twitter, Penn State is “prepared to make a significant, long-term financial commitment” to Shrewsberry. The news comes a day after Shrewsberry guided Penn State to a lopsided victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament over Texas A&M and on the eve of a showdown with the Texas Longhorns, the second seed in the Midwest Region.
Shrewsberry has been the head coach of the Nittany Lions for two seasons and he has quickly reshaped the image of the program through improved recruiting and, more importantly, great finds in the transfer portal such as All-American Jalen Pickett.
In his second season, Shreewsberry took Penn State to its third NCAA Tournament appearance since joining the Big Ten and picked up its first tournament win since 2001. This all comes on the heels of an impressive run that included Big Ten Tournament victories over Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana before taking NCAA Tournament No. 1 seed Purdue down to the wire in the Big Ten championship game.
Shrewsberry’s name had come up in various coaching rumors; Georgetown and Notre Dame are searching for a new head coach. This put Penn State in a position of determining whether it is worth the asking price to keep Shrewsberry in Happy Valley or take an easy out with a new head coach at a cheaper rate. One way or another Shrewsberry is about to be paid.
By the sounds of it, Penn State is willing to do what it takes to keep Shrewsberry in charge of the program. The financial resources are clearly there just from the help of Big Ten revenue distribution alone. It’s an encouraging sign, to say the least, to see Penn State willing to dig into the financial reserves to keep a good thing going.
But the decision is ultimately Shrewsberry’s to make. He has played this situation smartly with his public comments, and it will pay off for him no matter what happens.
