Penn State QB Trace McSorley suffers apparent leg injury vs. Iowa

Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley went down with an injury in the second quarter on Saturday vs. Iowa.

McSorley, looking to pass on a third-down play, was hit by three Iowa defenders as he stepped up in the pocket. McSorley was sacked, stayed down on the turf and immediately grabbed his right leg. He stayed on the field briefly and had to be helped up. He then walked off the field gingerly.

As Michael Ojemudia came untouched off the left side on a blitz, McSorley stepped up and was corralled from behind by defensive linemen Anthony Nelson (No. 98) and Chauncey Golston (No. 57). His right leg appeared to get pinned underneath.

McSorley has been one of the best players in college football in recent years.

McSorley left the game for much of the second quarter and the Nittany Lions turned to redshirt junior Tommy Stevens. Before the season, Stevens considered a graduate transfer but decided to stay at Penn State. He would have been heavily sought after on the transfer market.

McSorley returned to the game with a little more than four minutes remaining in the half. He stayed in for one series — a three-and-out — before retreating to the locker room with a few minutes remaining in the half.

McSorley re-entered the game in the second half and helped Penn State pull out a 30-24 win. The senior threw for 167 yards and a touchdown while adding 63 yards and a score on the ground. The game was tied 17-17 at halftime, and McSorley’s 51-yard TD run early in the third gave the Nittany Lions a lead they would not relinquish.
