Penguins trade prospects with Anaheim, acquire Thimo Nickl

The Pittsburgh Penguins trade won’t exactly affect their pursuit of the 2023 Stanley Cup, or the 2024 Cup, for that matter. Friday, the Penguins acquired defenseman Thimo Nickl, currently playing in the second-tier Swedish league, from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for former fifth-round pick Judd Caulfield.

Nickl, 21, has spent the 2022-23 season with AIK of HockeyAllsvenskan, the league below the Swedish Elite League, recording eight assists and 69 penalty minutes in 47 games. In parts of three seasons in HockeyAllsvenskan, the defenseman has tallied two goals, 16 assists, and 18 points in 88 games.
