Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry thinks Anthony Davis 'got some bad advice'

Anthony Davis didn’t play on Monday night in the New Orleans Pelicans’ 112-103 loss to the Golden State Warriors, missing his seventh-straight game due to back spasms.

He made it more than clear, though, that he wanted it to be his final game as a Pelican inside the Smoothie King Center.

Davis rocked a “That’s All Folks!” shirt upon arrival at the arena, paying homage to Porky Pig, reminding everyone that he is serious about the very public trade request he made in January.

Many expected Davis to land with the Los Angeles Lakers before the trade deadline this season, too — a saga that was played out publicly for weeks, if not months. While that didn’t happen, many expect Davis will be moved this offseason, whether it is to Los Angeles or elsewhere.

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry praised Davis after the game on Tuesday night, but he made it clear he wasn’t happy with how the situation played out — especially after realizing that the Pelicans have no more games left to play this season.

“I think he’s a great kid,” Gentry said. “I think he’s a very good kid. I think he’s a solid guy ... I think he got some bad advice, if you want me to tell the truth.”

“I’ll leave it at that,” Gentry added. “But there’s nothing wrong with AD. He’s a solid guy with good character. That’s the way I feel.”

Davis left the arena while reporters were speaking with Gentry, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, but he is expected to meet with the media on Wednesday morning.

The 26-year-old averaged 25.9 points and 12 rebounds in 56 games this season with the Pelicans, and was a six-time All-Star. New Orleans, however, failed repeatedly to build anything around him and failed to ever make it past the first round of the playoffs since drafting Davis in 2012.

The Pelicans finished this season with a 33-49 record, the third-worst in the Western Conference.
