Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says his old club should be going all-out to sign Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland this summer.

In the eyes of Scholes, the Red Devils are in need of an elite No. 9 and there is nobody better-suited to taking over the role than the Champions League’s top scorer this season.

Pointing to the history of Haaland playing under United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde, Scholes feels the Old Trafford club need to make their move as the pieces match their puzzle.

“He’s got that relationship with Ole and we all know how good he is,” he said to talkSPORT.

“Man United are desperate for a No. 9, an all-out centre-forward. Haaland would be the perfect choice, of course he would.

That said, Scholes is realistic enough to acknowledge that any other team searching a striker will inevitably look the way of Haaland too - and with Sergio Aguero set to leave Manchester City this summer, United’s local rivals are one such opponent.

“There are a couple of other names out there that could possibly do that,” Scholes added. “You have to think about his dad as well with the City link. That could be strong in this situation.

“But let’s see. Fingers crossed, if he does move, that he comes to the red side of Manchester.”

Dortmund have repeatedly said they have no particular need to sell a star name this summer and have no intentions of selling Haaland.

Man City knocked out Haaland and his Bundesliga side from the Champions League on Wednesday night.
