Patriots expected to sign Hoyer to back-up Brady

As has been reported by ProJo’s Mark Daniels and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots and Brian Hoyer have agreed on a three-year deal.

The New England Patriots set a ‘Clue®’-like mystery in motion on Monday night when they traded back-up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2018 second-round draft pick.

They appear to be continuing this 1980’s movie trend by writing their own version of ‘Back to the Future.’
As has been reported by Mark Daniels, a source has told the Providence Journal that familiar face, Brian Hoyer, is presently visiting Foxboro. According to ESPN, he’s expected to sign on Wednesday.
This move has been anticipated and should not come as a great surprise to anyone. There was already mutual interest between Hoyer, who was released from the 49ers, and the Patriots. Per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Hoyer had originally been included in the deal for Garoppolo. However, he was ultimately removed for what was deemed to be ‘compensatory pick’ reasons.
If the expected deal comes to fruition, it will be Hoyer’s second tour of duty with the Patriots. He began his career with the Patriots as Tom Brady’s understudy. From 2009-2011, he appeared in 13 games. The 32-year-old veteran has since started games for Arizona, Cleveland, Houston, Chicago and San Francisco. This season, he started six games for the 49ers, completing 58 percent of his passes and throwing for 1,245 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.
By adding Hoyer, the Patriots bring in a quarterback familiar with their system. As a result, he should fit in nicely with the Patriots and provides some much-needed insurance at the quarterback position.
