Park Tudor's Jasiah Rogers sets stage for state meet with fastest 100 time in 20 years.

In the week leading up to the IHSAA regional boys track meet at Lawrence Central, Jasiah Rogers made a slight adjustment to the angle of the pedals on his starting blocks.

Consider it a success.

Rogers, a Park Tudor senior, ran the 100 in a blistering 10.30 seconds on a cool evening to not only punch his ticket to next week’s state meet, but post the best mark in the state this spring. According to the records kept at Indianarunner.com, Rogers’ time ties him for sixth in state history and is the best since Gary West Side’s Mark Jelks ran a 10.25 at the state meet in 2002.

“I came into regionals feeling good,” said Rogers, who set a state record at the indoor state meet with a 6.68 time in the 60 meters. “Lots of great support at my back, and I did something different with my blocks. Turns out, it worked.”

Rogers, a Purdue recruit, will undoubtedly stick with the plan going into next week’s state meet in Bloomington. He also edged Christian Woodson of North Central to win the 200, running a 21.76 time to Woodson’s 21.79.

The 100 figured to be a battle between Rogers and Lawrence Central senior Elijah Jackson, who previously had the best time in the state this spring at 10.47 in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference meet at the end of April. Jackson finished second with a 10.50.

“I couldn’t be here without him,” Rogers said of Jackson. “I’ve been competing with him since last summer in AAU season and it’s been a great season for both of us.”

Rogers joked he did not make his block adjustment on the fly Thursday night.

“It’s something I’ve been working on with my club coach,” he said. “I didn’t come out here and just do it. That would not be smart. I’ve been working on it for the past few days. We did it so I could maximize my strength. In the 100, if you make a mistake you’re finished.”

No mistakes for Rogers in Thursday’s race. But he knows he will have to put up another good performance next week with a field that will include Jackson, Brownsburg’s Dominic Calhoun and Warren Central’s Jaelyn Reeves-Lile as top competition.

“In past years, I haven’t had someone really push me like (Jackson),” Rogers said. “I’m glad I’ve been able to work with him on a pretty consistent basis.”

Mt. Vernon won the regional as a team with 73 points to edge second-place North Central (66). Lawrence North (54), Lawrence Central (51) and Brebeuf Jesuit (40) rounded out the top five.

Mt. Vernon senior and Purdue football recruit George Burhenn won the 110 hurdles in 14.31 seconds, a season best and the best mark in the state prior to Thursday (Charlestown’s Jake Ottersbach posted a 14.12 in the regional at Bloomington North). Burhenn also won the 300 hurdles in 38.74 seconds.

Southport’s Nickens Lemba won the 400 (48.20) in a final preparation to face Plainfield’s Nayyir Newash-Campbell in next week’s state meet. Heritage Christian junior Luke Himes won the shot put (62-7) and discus (169-4).

Delta senior Abram Stitt, the top long jumper coming into the regional, went 23 feet, 5 inches to win. Yorktown senior Kolton Nanko overcame a broken pole vault to jump 14 feet and win the regional title.

North Central senior Lee Martin went 6-6 to win the high jump. Teammate Nate Killeen won the 800 with a 1:54.93.
