Panthers QB Bryce Young called a ‘mental savant’

Between the intricate workings of head coach Frank Reich and the new stylings of coordinator Thomas Brown, the Carolina Panthers offense probably isn’t an easy one to learn. But that might not be the case for quarterback Bryce Young.

2023’s No. 1 overall pick has received even more praise for his galaxy brain. This time, it was senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler dishing out the following this week:

“I was told his mental aptitude has been as advertised,” Fowler said on ESPN’s Get Up. “That’s what he was known for during the draft process, as a mental savant. I was told with the Panthers’ offense is a hard install. It’s got shades of the Los Angeles Rams system from new offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.”

Brown, of course, learned a bit under Rams head coach Sean McVay—who is widely accepted as one of the most advanced offensive minds in the game. Mixing that with Reich’s approach, which is quite complex in its own right, shouldn’t be simple for most quarterbacks—let alone a rookie.

Nonetheless, Young is seemingly thriving during the learning process.

“No new quarterback bats 100 in learning it in the first month, but I was told he was pretty darn close to 100 percent,” Fowler added. “So, the Panthers really believe that as long as he has command of the offense, they’re in good shape. They don’t need him to be a hero because this is a really good emerging roster.”
