Pacers trade Buddy Hield to 76ers for Marcus Morris, Furkan Korkmaz, 2nd round picks

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Pacers have traded sharpshooting veteran guard Buddy Hield to the 76ers for veteran forward Marcus Morris, shooting guard Furkan Korkmaz and three second-round picks, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.com.

Neither player was expected to be with the Pacers even by tip-off of their game against the Warriors on Thursday. Morris was later traded to the Spurs in a deal that acquired Doug McDermott and Korkmaz was waived according to a report from Wojnarowski.

Hield set the Pacers' single-season franchise record for 3-pointers last season with 288, finishing second only to Golden State's Klay Thompson in the NBA. His numbers fell off this season as he was in and out of the starting lineup as he is averaging 12.0 points per game after averaging 16.8 per game last season and his 3-point clip fell from 42.5% to 38.4% but he still has 137 3-pointers this season which puts him 14th in the NBA. His 1,842 career 3-pointers put him 22nd on the NBA's all-time list.

The 31-year-old Hield's four-year, $92 million contract is set to expire at the end of this season and attempts to sign him to a contract extension this summer were not successful. Hield was asked after the Pacers' win over the Rockets on Tuesday about his feelings going into the deadline.

Bummer: Why his Pacers teammates don’t want to trade Hield

"It's the business of basketball," Hield said. "One thing is I always thank God I have a jersey on me. You always appreciate that somebody wants you out there. If it happens, some team is going to get a Buddy who is ready to play and is excited for new opportunities. Right now I'm happy at Indiana and just taking it day-by-day and we'll see what happens."

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said in his pre-game press conference before Thursday's game with the Warriors that he could not discuss any incoming players, but that he could discuss Hield and his contributions and departure. He said he spoke with Hield earlier Thursday.

"He left, really an indelible impression on the people of our organization and our city and our fans," Carlisle said. "We'll remember him and we'll certainly miss him. This is part of the business. When these things happen, you wish people well. ... He's going to go down in this league as one of the greatest 3-point shooters ever."

Even with the eventual gain of McDermott, Hield's departure means there will be more opportunity for younger players including guards Bennedict Mathurin, Ben Sheppard and perhaps even Jarace Walker, though Walker is more of a frontcourt player. Though Carlisle stayed away from mentioning the Pacers' additions through the trades, he said they did fit as far as their more long-term vision.

"That's a part of a growth of young players and it's also a growth of a roster and a franchise," Carlisle said. "These are all the things that go along with growing a team. We're not just growing a team for this year. We have a longer-range vision. Moves that have been made since the beginning of last year have been made with the goal of becoming a championship-contending team. So the work goes on."

NBA trade deadline: Pacers NBA Draft picks in wake of Buddy Hield trade
