Pacers split with Braves

Feb. 13—USC AIKEN 8-2, UNC PEMBROKE 6-3

The USC Aiken softball team split Saturday's home doubleheader against UNC Pembroke, winning game one 8-6 before dropping game two 3-2 in eight innings.

Payton Baker (2-0) picked up the win in the opener after allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out three in seven innings.

The Pacers (5-3) pounded out 11 hits for the game, with Brianna Dow, Jena Dewalt and Shircoria Bosket each notching two hits apiece.

Emily Ayers put the Pacers on the board with a two-run home run in the first inning, and Dow singled home Bosket in the second for a 3-0 lead.

UNCP tied it in the top of the fourth with a three-run homer, but Dewalt put the Pacers back ahead with an RBI single and Dow hit a two-run shot to go ahead 6-3.

The Braves cut the deficit to a run in the fifth, and in the bottom half Mallory Shaver hit a two-run single to restore the three-run lead.

Rebekah Cook (1-2) was tagged with the loss in the second game after UNCP won it in the eighth with a sacrifice fly. She pitched all eight innings, allowing five hits while striking out a pair of batters.

The Pacers had just six hits in the second game, with Dewalt and Brooke Moore each recording two. Moore's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at 2 apiece.

USCA is back in action Sunday with a doubleheader at Catawba. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
